Tools you need for oil change on a 2017-2022 Honda CR-V

Easy ยท 45-60 minutes (first time, including splash shield removal) ยท Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 17 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 65 mm 14-flute oil filter cap wrench
  3. 10 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  4. Torque wrench, 3/8 in drive
  5. New 14 mm drain bolt washer

Fifth-gen CR-Vs are among the easier modern oil changes. Every engine in the generation โ€” the 1.5 turbo, the 2.4 K24 in 2017-2019 LX, and the 2020-2022 2.0 hybrid โ€” uses a 17 mm drain bolt, a 14 mm aluminum crush washer, 0W-20 oil, and the same short Honda A02-style spin-on filter that takes a 65 mm 14-flute cap wrench. The only real labor is getting the lower plastic splash shield off, which is 10 mm bolts plus a handful of push-in clips that like to break if you pry them with a screwdriver.

The two things people get wrong: reusing the crush washer (then chasing a slow drain-bolt drip) and filling to the book capacity instead of checking the dipstick. Put in about 90% of the listed amount, run it, then top up. And don't forget the Maintenance Minder reset โ€” the CR-V calculates oil life, so if you skip the reset the next reminder will come at the wrong time.

Differences within the 2017-2022 generation

Tool sizes are identical across the 1.5T, 2.4 K24 and 2.0 hybrid: 17 mm drain bolt, 14 mm washer, 65 mm 14-flute filter wrench. Only capacity differs โ€” roughly 3.7 US qt with filter for the 1.5 turbo, 4.4 US qt for the 2.4, and about 4.2 US qt for the hybrid (verify in your manual). The 1.5T and hybrid have fuller lower splash shields, so expect a few more 10 mm bolts and clips than on a 2017-2019 2.4 LX.

Torque specs

Oil pan drain bolt (17 mm head)29 ft-lb (39 Nm)
Spin-on oil filterHand tighten 7/8 turn after gasket contact (approx 16 ft-lb / 22 Nm) โ€” verify in the service manual
Lower splash shield bolts (10 mm)Snug, approx 7 ft-lb (9 Nm) โ€” verify in the service manual

How the job goes

  1. Park level, chock the rear wheels, and run the engine 2-3 minutes so the oil flows but is not scalding. On the hybrid, note the engine may not be running when the car is 'on' โ€” shut the system fully off.
  2. Raise the front of the vehicle at the factory jack point and set jack stands under the rated front support points. Never work under a jack alone.
  3. Remove the lower engine splash shield: 10 mm bolts around the perimeter plus push-in plastic clips and a few Phillips screw-clips. On 1.5T and hybrid cars the shield is large; some trims have a removable access hatch near the drain bolt.
  4. Position the drain pan, then loosen the 17 mm drain bolt with a socket (not an open-end wrench) and remove it by hand. Let it drain 10-15 minutes.
  5. Pull the old 14 mm crush washer off the bolt, wipe the bolt and the pan sealing face clean, fit a new washer, and reinstall the bolt to 29 ft-lb.
  6. Move the pan under the oil filter on the front/lower face of the block. Fit the 65 mm 14-flute cap wrench and back the filter off; expect oil to run down the subframe.
  7. Wipe the filter mounting flange clean and confirm the old filter's rubber gasket came off with it. Smear fresh oil on the new filter's gasket.
  8. Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts, then tighten 7/8 turn further (cap wrench for the final nudge). Do not crank it down.
  9. Reinstall the splash shield with all bolts and clips; a missing clip causes highway rattle and flapping.
  10. Lower the vehicle. Add oil through the filler cap: about 3.4 qt for the 1.5T, 4.1 qt for the 2.4, roughly 3.9 qt for the hybrid, then check the dipstick and top to the upper mark. Do not fill blind to the full capacity figure.
  11. Start the engine, let the oil pressure light go out, run 30 seconds, shut off, wait 3 minutes and recheck the level and both the drain bolt and filter for leaks.
  12. Reset the Maintenance Minder: with the ignition on, use the steering wheel arrows or the display's Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance Info to select Oil Life and hold to reset to 100%.
  13. Take the used oil and filter to a recycling point.

Watch out

The 17 mm drain bolt, 14 mm crush washer, 65 mm/14-flute A02 filter, 0W-20 spec and 29 ft-lb drain torque are correct for all 5th-gen CR-V engines; double-check your exact capacity and filter number against the owner's manual, especially on the 2020-2022 hybrid.

Frequently asked

What size socket is the oil drain plug on a 2017-2022 Honda CR-V?

17 mm, and use a 6-point socket rather than an open-end wrench so you don't round the head. Torque it to 29 ft-lb (39 Nm) with a new 14 mm crush washer, part 94109-14000.

How much oil does a 5th-gen CR-V take?

The 1.5L turbo takes about 3.7 US quarts with a new filter, the 2.4L K24 about 4.4 quarts, and the 2.0 hybrid roughly 4.2 quarts. All three specify 0W-20 full synthetic; always confirm on the dipstick rather than trusting the number.

Which oil filter wrench fits the CR-V filter?

A 65 mm, 14-flute cap-style wrench fits the Honda 15400-PLM-A02 filter and its equivalents used on all 5th-gen CR-V engines. A 3-jaw or strap wrench is a useful backup if the last filter was overtightened.

How do I reset the oil life / Maintenance Minder on a 2017-2022 CR-V?

With the ignition on, use the steering wheel arrows to scroll the driver display to the Maintenance Info / Oil Life screen, or go to Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance Info on the center display, then press and hold the select/reset button until it returns to 100%.
