The E210 Corolla is an easy oil change with one wrinkle: Toyota dropped the spin-on filter for a plastic cartridge housing low on the front of the engine. You need a 64/65 mm 14-flute cap socket for it, and the housing holds about a cup of oil that will run down the subframe unless you open its little internal drain plug first. Everything else is conventional — a 14 mm hex-head drain plug in an aluminum pan and a plastic undertray held on by 10 mm bolts and push clips.
What varies is the oil. The 1.8 L 2ZR-FAE takes 0W-20, while the 2.0 L M20A-FKS and the hybrid's 2ZR-FXE are specified for 0W-16, which is thinner than most parts stores stock. The mistake people make most is reusing the drain plug crush washer and then overtightening the plug to stop the weep — that is how these aluminum pans get stripped. Buy a handful of 90430-12031 washers and torque to 40 Nm.
