Rear brakes on the XV70 Camry are one of the friendlier jobs on the car. The caliper comes off with two 14 mm guide-pin bolts, the bracket with two 17 mm bolts, the lug nuts are 21 mm, and the piston pushes straight back with a simple spreader or C-clamp. Sizes are the same whether you have the 2.5 A25A-FKS, the 3.5 V6 or the hybrid; only rotor diameter and pad compound vary by trim.

The thing people get wrong is the parking brake. Camrys of this generation use a small set of parking-brake shoes inside the rotor hat rather than a motor pushing the caliper piston, so if you forget to release the parking brake, or the shoes have worn a ridge in the drum, the rotor simply will not slide off and folks start hammering. Release the brake first, and if the rotor still binds, back off the star adjuster through the access hole in the rotor face. Also budget for seized rotors: two M8 x 1.25 bolts in the rotor's service holes save a lot of swearing.

Differences within the 2018-2024 generation

Fastener sizes are identical for the 2.5 A25A-FKS, 3.5 2GR-FKS and the hybrid: 21 mm lugs, 14 mm guide-pin bolts, 17 mm bracket bolts. What changes is the hardware itself — V6 and XSE/TRD cars generally run larger rear rotors and heavier pads than L/LE/SE and hybrid models, so measure your old rotor diameter and thickness before ordering. Hybrids use heavy regenerative braking, so rear rotors there often rust and pit before they wear out.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the front wheels, and fully release the parking brake (press the EPB switch to release, or drop the lever/pedal on trims with a mechanical brake). Confirm the brake indicator is off.
  2. Break the 21 mm lug nuts loose while the wheels are still on the ground, then jack the rear and set it on jack stands at the rear pinch welds. Remove both rear wheels.
  3. Open the brake fluid reservoir cap and rest it loosely on top so pushing the pistons back does not build pressure.
  4. On one side, remove the two 14 mm caliper guide-pin bolts. If the pin turns with the bolt, hold the guide pin body with a 17 mm wrench.
  5. Lift the caliper off the bracket and hang it from the spring with a bungee cord. Never let it dangle on the flexible hose.
  6. Pull the old pads and the anti-rattle clips out of the bracket. Note how the shims and clips are oriented before discarding.
  7. Remove the two 17 mm caliper bracket bolts from the back of the knuckle and take the bracket off.
  8. Pull the rotor off. If it is rust-seized, thread two M8 x 1.25 bolts into the rotor's service holes and tighten them evenly to press it off, or tap the hat with a dead blow hammer. If the rotor is held by the internal parking brake shoes, find the rubber plug or slot on the rotor face, rotate the rotor until you see the star adjuster, and back the adjuster off with a screwdriver.
  9. Inspect the parking brake shoes and drum surface inside the rotor hat while it is off. Glazed, contaminated or worn-out shoes should be replaced now.
  10. Wire brush the hub face clean, wipe it, and apply a very thin smear of anti-seize to the hub face only, keeping it off the stud threads and mating surface of the wheel.
  11. Clean the new rotor both sides with brake cleaner to remove the shipping oil, then fit it over the studs. Hold it in place with a lug nut finger tight if needed.
  12. Reinstall the caliper bracket and torque the 17 mm bolts to spec. Clean the pad abutment surfaces and fit the new anti-rattle clips.
  13. Apply a thin film of silicone brake grease to the pad ear contact points and the back of the shims, not the friction surface. Install the pads with the wear indicator in the original position.
  14. Compress the caliper piston fully with a spreader or C-clamp using an old pad as a pressure plate. Pull each guide pin out, wipe it, regrease with silicone caliper grease, and reseat it; replace any torn boots.
  15. Slide the caliper over the new pads and torque the 14 mm guide-pin bolts to spec.
  16. Repeat on the other side. Then refit the wheels and torque the 21 mm lug nuts in a star pattern to 76 ft-lb.
  17. With the wheels back on the ground, pump the brake pedal until it is firm, check the fluid level and refit the cap. Cycle the electronic parking brake several times, or apply and release a mechanical brake 5-10 clicks, to let the internal shoes self-adjust.
  18. Bed the new pads in: from about 35 mph, do 6-8 moderate stops down to 5-10 mph with a short cool-down between, then avoid holding the brakes at a stop for a few minutes.
