The XV70 Camry is a sealed-transmission car: no dipstick, no filler tube, and Toyota lists the fluid as fill-for-life under normal use. That does not mean the fluid lasts forever, it means Toyota did not design the job for a driveway. A drain and fill on the UA80 8-speed is mechanically easy โ€” two plugs and a standpipe โ€” but the level is set by letting excess fluid overflow while the engine idles and the fluid sits between 40 and 45 C, which means you need the car dead level on four stands and a way to read fluid temperature.

What varies is the transaxle, not the technique: the 2.5 A25A-FKS and 3.5 2GR-FKS both use the UA80 eight-speed, and the hybrid uses a P610-family eCVT that is drained and refilled by measured volume instead. The thing people get wrong is doing the level check with the fluid hot after a test drive, or with only the front of the car in the air. Both leave the transmission low on fluid, which is exactly what kills these units.

Differences within the 2018-2024 generation

The 2.5 (A25A-FKS) and 3.5 (2GR-FKS) share the UA80 8-speed: same 24 mm side fill plug and same concentric drain plug plus internal overflow standpipe, about 3.5-4 quarts per drain. The hybrid's eCVT transaxle uses a plain drain plug and a separate fill/level plug with no overflow standpipe and no torque converter to prime, so you refill by measuring what came out โ€” roughly 3.5-4 quarts โ€” and there is no 40-45 C overflow step in the same form. All three take Toyota ATF WS.

How the job goes

  1. Buy the fluid first and confirm it is Toyota ATF WS spec. Drive the car 10-15 minutes so the fluid is warm and suspended contaminants come out, then park on level ground.
  2. Chock the wheels, lift the car at all four jack points and set it on four jack stands so it is level front-to-back and side-to-side. Check with a level laid across the transmission pan area. An uneven car equals a wrong fluid level.
  3. Remove the lower engine/transmission splash shield: 10 mm and 12 mm bolts plus plastic push-pin clips. Set the fasteners aside in order.
  4. Locate the transmission pan. On the UA80 (2.5 and 3.5) you will see a drain plug at the lowest point of the pan and a separate refill plug on the side of the case. Wipe everything clean and photograph the plug locations before you touch anything.
  5. Position the drain pan. Remove the pan drain plug (6 mm hex bit on most XV70 builds; some use a 24 mm hex-head outer plug โ€” check yours before you break anything) and let the fluid drain fully. Expect roughly 3.5-4 quarts.
  6. With the drain open, unscrew the internal overflow standpipe from inside the drain opening using the 6 mm hex bit on an extension. A little more fluid will follow. Inspect both parts for metal fuzz.
  7. Refit the overflow standpipe with a new gasket and torque to spec, then refit the drain plug with a new gasket and torque to spec.
  8. Remove the refill plug on the side of the case with the 24 mm socket. Pump in slightly more fresh ATF WS than you drained โ€” typically 4 to 4.5 quarts โ€” until fluid just starts to weep back out of the fill port. Reinstall the fill plug loosely.
  9. Lower nothing yet. Start the engine, foot on the brake, and cycle the shifter P-R-N-D-N-R-P slowly, pausing a few seconds in each range, to fill the converter and passages.
  10. Monitor fluid temperature with a scan tool PID, or aim the IR thermometer at the middle of the pan. With the engine idling, wait until the fluid reaches 40-45 C (104-113 F). Do not go over โ€” if it overshoots, shut down and let it cool and try again.
  11. Inside that temperature window, with the engine still idling, remove the drain plug only (the standpipe stays in). Excess fluid drains until it thins to a pencil-thin stream or drips; that is the correct level. If nothing comes out, you are low: add fluid at the fill port and repeat.
  12. Reinstall the drain plug with a new gasket, torque to spec, and torque the side fill plug. Shut the engine off.
  13. Clean the pan area with brake cleaner, reinstall the splash shield, lower the car and drive it. Recheck for leaks after a few heat cycles.
  14. Hybrid only: the eCVT transaxle has a drain plug and a fill/level plug on the case. Drain, measure what came out, refill with the same measured amount of ATF WS (about 3.5-4 quarts) through the fill port, then verify per the service manual level procedure. There is no torque converter to fill and no standpipe to remove.

Watch out

The fluid spec (Toyota ATF WS), the 40-45 C level-check method and the concentric drain/overflow-standpipe design are certain for the XV70; the exact plug drive sizes vary slightly by build year and transaxle, so test-fit a 24 mm socket and 6 mm and 10 mm hex bits, and get the torque values from the Toyota service information for your VIN rather than guessing.

Frequently asked

Does the 2018-2024 Camry transmission really have lifetime fluid?

Toyota calls it fill-for-life for normal driving and only lists an inspection or change for severe duty such as heavy towing. Most independent techs change it every 60,000-100,000 miles, and the fluid that comes out of a 60k-mile car is visibly darker than new ATF WS.

Can I check the Camry transmission fluid level without a scan tool?

Yes, with a non-contact infrared thermometer aimed at the center of the transmission pan, but it is less accurate than reading the ATF temperature PID with a scan tool. Either way you must set the level while the fluid is between 40 and 45 C (104-113 F) with the engine idling.

How much fluid does a Camry 8-speed drain and fill take?

Roughly 3.5-4 quarts comes out, and you put back slightly more before setting the level by overflow. Buy 5 quarts of ATF WS so you have enough to top up during the check and a little left over.

Can I use an aftermarket ATF instead of Toyota ATF WS?

Only a fluid explicitly licensed or specified as meeting Toyota ATF WS, such as Idemitsu or Aisin WS-spec fluid. Generic multi-vehicle ATF will often cause shift shudder and torque converter clutch complaints in the UA80.
