Tools you need for transmission fluid on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150

Moderate · 1.5-2.5 hours · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 8 mm hex bit socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. Fluid transfer pump with hose
  3. Scan tool reading transmission fluid temp
  4. Torque wrench, 3/8 in drive, in-lb/ft-lb
  5. Mercon ULV fluid, 6 quarts

Every 2021-2024 F-150 runs the 10R80 10-speed, so this job is basically identical across 2.7 and 3.5 EcoBoost, 5.0 V8 and PowerBoost. A drain and fill only gets about 5.5-6 of the 13-plus quarts in the system, so many owners do it every 30,000-40,000 miles rather than waiting for the severe-duty interval. The mechanical part is easy: two hex plugs and a transfer pump.

The part people get wrong is the level check. There is no dipstick, so the level is set by the fill port overflow with the engine idling in Park and the fluid between 190 and 200 F, which means you need a scan tool that shows transmission fluid temperature. Also crack the fill plug loose before you drain anything, because if that plug is seized you have no way to put fluid back in.

ItemType
Floor jack
2-ton minimum
Lift the truck to reach the pan and side fill plug.
Requiredshop
Jack stands
3-ton pair, or 4 stands
Truck must be supported level on all four corners for an accurate fluid level.
Requiredshop
Socket set
8, 10, 13 mm, 3/8 in drive
Removes underbody aero shields and any transmission heat shield in the way.
Requiredshop
Ratchet
3/8 in drive with 6 in extension
General access to pan and shield fasteners.
Requiredshop
Hex bit socket
8 mm hex, 3/8 in drive (have 1/4 in and 5/16 in hex on hand)
Fits the pan drain plug and the case fill plug.
Requiredshop
Drain pan
10 quart low-profile
Catches the 5-6 quarts that come out of the pan.
Requiredshop
Fluid transfer pump
Hand or lever pump with small-diameter flexible hose
Only way to push fluid uphill into the side fill port.
Requiredshop
Scan tool
Reads Ford TCM/PCM live data (FORScan with OBD2 adapter, or bidirectional scanner)
Sets the level at the 190-200 F fluid temperature window; no dipstick exists.
Requiredshop
Torque wrench
3/8 in drive, 10-80 ft-lb
Tightens drain and fill plugs without stripping aluminum threads.
Requiredshop
Inch-pound torque wrench
1/4 in drive, 20-200 in-lb
Needed only if you drop the pan or reinstall shield fasteners to spec.
Recommendedshop
Mercon ULV transmission fluid
Ford XT-12-QULV, 6 quarts for drain-and-fill
The 10R80 requires ultra-low-viscosity ULV; nothing else is compatible.
Partsshop
Drain plug seal / crush washer
Per Ford part catalog for 10R80 pan plug
Cheap insurance against a weeping plug; reuse only if undamaged.
Partsshop
Transmission pan gasket/filter kit
10R80 pan with integrated filter (pan replacement) if dropping the pan
On the 10R80 the filter is part of the pan assembly, so filter service means a new pan.
Partsshop
Brake cleaner and shop rags
Aerosol
Cleans the pan area and spilled ULV, which is thin and runs everywhere.
Consumablesshop
Nitrile gloves

Keeps hot fluid off skin.
Safetyshop
Safety glasses

Hot fluid drips from the pan and crossmember area.
Safetyshop
Wheel chocks

Engine runs in Park during the level check, so the truck must not move.
Safetyshop
Infrared thermometer

Backup temperature reference on the pan if the scan tool PID is unclear.

Differences within the 2021-2024 generation

Tool sizes are the same on all four powertrains because they all use the 10R80. The PowerBoost's MHT version adds the integrated electric motor and high-voltage cabling near the bellhousing, so route your hose and tools clear of the orange cables. 4x4 and off-road-package trucks may have extra skid plates or aero shields (8, 10 or 13 mm bolts) to remove first.

How the job goes

  1. Buy fluid first and confirm it says Mercon ULV; have at least 6 quarts on hand plus a spare quart for topping off.
  2. Drive the truck 10-15 minutes to warm the fluid, then park on level ground, chock the wheels and let it cool enough to work under safely.
  3. Lift all four corners and support the truck level on jack stands; an unlevel truck gives a false fluid level.
  4. Remove any plastic underbody aero shield or heat shield covering the transmission pan (8 or 10 mm bolts).
  5. Locate the fill plug on the passenger side of the transmission case and loosen it FIRST with the 8 mm hex bit. If it will not come out, stop: you cannot refill the truck.
  6. Position the drain pan, then remove the pan drain plug with the 8 mm hex bit and let the fluid drain fully, typically 5.5-6 quarts.
  7. Inspect the fluid: dark brown with burnt smell or glitter means you should plan a pan/filter replacement, not just a drain and fill.
  8. Clean the plug, fit a new seal, reinstall the drain plug and torque to spec. Do not use thread sealant.
  9. Using the transfer pump through the fill port, add 5.5-6 quarts, or the same amount you drained plus a little extra.
  10. Loosely refit the fill plug, lower the truck to level ground, connect the scan tool and monitor transmission fluid temperature.
  11. Start the engine, hold the brake and cycle the selector through P-R-N-D-R-P pausing a few seconds in each range, then leave it in Park at idle.
  12. With the engine idling in Park and TFT between 190 and 200 F, remove the fill plug. Fluid should just dribble from the port. If it runs out in a steady stream the level is high; if nothing comes out, pump in more fluid until it weeps.
  13. Once a slow dribble is established in the temperature window, install the fill plug and torque to spec, shut the engine off and wipe the case clean.
  14. Refit the underbody shields, road test, then recheck the fill area for leaks after a few drive cycles.
  15. Clear any stored codes from the scan tool session; a fresh adaptive relearn will smooth shifts over the next 50-100 miles.

Watch out

The 10R80 drain and fill plugs are hex-socket type and 8 mm fits the large majority, but plug sizes have varied across 2021-2024 builds, so verify with a hex set (1/4 in and 5/16 in as alternates) before you drain anything, and confirm torque values and the 190-200 F check window in the Ford service manual for your VIN.

Frequently asked

What fluid does the 2021-2024 F-150 10-speed take?

Mercon ULV only, Ford spec XT-12-QULV. A drain and fill takes about 5.5-6 quarts; total system capacity is roughly 13 quarts. Do not substitute Mercon LV or a universal ATF.

Does the F-150 10R80 have a transmission dipstick?

No. The level is set through a fill plug on the passenger side of the case with the engine idling in Park and fluid temperature at 190-200 F, which is why a scan tool reading transmission fluid temp is required.

What size socket fits the 10R80 drain and fill plugs?

Both are hex-socket plugs and an 8 mm hex bit socket on a 3/8 in drive fits most trucks. Sizes have varied by build, so have 1/4 in and 5/16 in hex bits on hand before you start.

Do I need to change the filter too?

The 10R80 filter is integral to the pan, so changing it means installing a new pan and filter assembly. Most owners do repeat drain-and-fills and only drop the pan if the fluid is burnt or at higher mileage.
