Tools you need for transmission fluid on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4

Must-have tools
  1. 24 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 6 mm hex bit socket, 3/8 in drive
  3. 10 mm hex bit socket, 3/8 in drive
  4. Fluid transfer pump with hose
  5. Scan tool reading ATF temperature

The XA50 RAV4 has no transmission dipstick. On the 2.5L gas cars the UA80 8-speed is filled from a plug on the side of the case and the level is set by an internal overflow tube, which only reads correctly when the fluid is between roughly 40 and 45°C. That means you need a scan tool that shows transmission fluid temperature — an infrared gun on the pan is a sanity check, not a substitute. Hybrids use an eCVT transaxle that takes the same ATF WS but is refilled by measured quantity rather than by overflow.

The tooling is simple: a 24 mm socket, a 6 mm hex bit, a 10 mm hex bit, a transfer pump and new crush washers. The thing people get wrong is the car not sitting level, or checking the level when the fluid is still hot from the drive. Both give a wrong reading, and on these units an incorrect level shows up as shudder and flare on light throttle. Second most common mistake: draining first and only then discovering the fill plug is seized.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

2.5L gas (A25A-FKS) cars use the UA80E (FWD) or UA80F (AWD) 8-speed: 24 mm hex-head pan drain plug, 6 mm hex internal overflow plug, 24 mm side fill plug, roughly 3.5-4 L per drain and fill out of an 8.8-9.6 L total. Hybrids use the THS eCVT transaxle: drain plug typically a 10 mm internal hex, refill by measured quantity (about 3.5-4 L) with no idle overflow check. AWD hybrids also have a separate rear eAxle that takes hypoid gear oil, not ATF.

How the job goes

  1. Buy fluid and gaskets first. Confirm which transaxle you have: 2.5L gas = UA80E/UA80F 8-speed; hybrid = eCVT transaxle. They use the same ATF WS but different level-setting procedures.
  2. Drive the vehicle 10-15 minutes to warm the fluid, then park on a flat surface, chock the wheels and shut it off.
  3. Raise all four corners and support the vehicle so it sits level. An unlevel car gives a wrong level and either overfills or underfills the box.
  4. Remove the plastic engine undertray and any splash shield over the transmission pan using 10 mm and 12 mm sockets plus a clip tool.
  5. Locate the plugs. On the UA80 the pan has a large hex-head drain plug (24 mm) with a smaller 6 mm hex overflow tube plug threaded inside its boss; the refill plug is a 24 mm hex plug higher up on the side of the case. On the hybrid, the drain plug is on the transaxle housing (10 mm hex on most) with a separate side refill plug.
  6. Loosen and remove the side refill/fill plug FIRST. If you cannot get it out, you cannot refill the unit — better to find out before draining.
  7. Position the drain pan and remove the drain plug. Let it drain fully. On the 8AT you will get roughly 3.5-4 liters out of an 8.8-9.6 liter total; this is a partial change, not a flush.
  8. 8AT only: with the pan empty, unscrew the inner 6 mm hex overflow tube plug and let any remaining fluid above the tube drain. Reinstall the overflow plug with a new gasket to spec before refilling.
  9. Fit a new gasket to the drain plug and torque it to spec. Clean the pan area with brake cleaner so leaks show later.
  10. Pump in new ATF WS through the side fill hole. Add the same volume you drained, then about 0.5 liter extra so the level is above the overflow tube.
  11. 8AT level set: reinstall the fill plug loosely, start the engine, shift through P-R-N-D-N-R-P with your foot on the brake, then leave it idling in Park. Watch ATF temperature on the scan tool.
  12. When ATF temperature reaches the check window (about 40-45°C / 104-113°F), remove the 6 mm hex overflow plug with the engine idling. Excess fluid runs out. When the flow slows to a thin stream or drip, the level is correct — reinstall the overflow plug with a new gasket and torque it.
  13. If nothing comes out of the overflow tube, the box is low: add fluid through the fill plug until it does, then recheck within the temperature window.
  14. Hybrid only: there is no overflow-tube idle procedure on most XA50 hybrids. Refill the exact specified quantity (about 3.5-4 liters for a drain and fill — verify in the service manual for your build), reinstall the fill plug with a new gasket and torque it.
  15. Install the fill plug with a new gasket and torque to spec. Wipe everything down.
  16. Reinstall the undertray, lower the vehicle, then road test. Recheck the plugs for seeps after the drive and again a day later.
  17. AWD hybrid: the rear eAxle uses hypoid gear oil, not ATF. That is a separate job with its own fill and drain plugs.

Watch out

The procedure, fluid type and the 24 mm / 6 mm / 10 mm plug tooling are correct for the XA50 platform, but exact plug head sizes and all torque values vary by transaxle code and build date, so confirm the plug sizes visually and get the torque figures from the Toyota service manual for your VIN.

Frequently asked

Does the RAV4 8-speed transmission have a dipstick?

No. The UA80 in the 2019-2024 RAV4 is sealed and has no dipstick or top fill tube. You refill through a plug on the side of the case and set the level by letting excess run out of an internal overflow tube at 40-45°C fluid temperature.

How much fluid does a RAV4 transmission drain and fill take?

Expect about 3.5-4 liters (roughly 4 quarts) out of an 8.8-9.6 liter total on the 8-speed, so buy 5 quarts of Toyota ATF WS to allow for overflow. Hybrid transaxles are similar at about 3.5-4 liters.

Do I really need a scan tool to change the RAV4 transmission fluid?

For the 2.5L gas 8-speed, yes — the level check is only valid in a narrow ATF temperature window, and you cannot judge that reliably without a live temperature reading. Any scan tool or app that displays the transmission fluid temperature PID will do; you do not need full Techstream.

Can I use a universal ATF instead of Toyota WS?

Don't. The UA80 and the hybrid transaxle are specified for Toyota ATF WS, and the frictional properties of aftermarket multi-vehicle fluids are a well-known cause of torque converter shudder and harsh shifts in these units. Genuine WS or a fluid explicitly licensed for WS is the only safe choice.
