On the 3rd-gen Tacoma this is one of the easier fluid jobs. There is a plastic drain cock at the lower driver's corner of the radiator, and the only real wrenching is pulling the lower splash shield (or the front skid plate on TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trucks) with 10 mm and 12 mm sockets. A single radiator drain gets you roughly 1.5 gallons out of a system that holds more than 2, so a lot of old coolant stays in the block and heater core unless you pull the block plug or do a second drain-and-fill a few hundred miles later.

The thing people get wrong is air. There is no bleeder screw anywhere on these trucks, so if you just top off the radiator and drive away you will end up with a big air pocket, no heat from the vents, and a needle that wanders. Use a spill-free funnel, run the engine with the heater on full hot until both fans cycle and the bubbling stops, and recheck the level cold the next morning. Differences within the 2016-2023 generation

Tool sizes are the same for both engines: 10 mm and 12 mm for the lower shield, plus 14 mm on some TRD skid plate hardware. The difference is access and volume โ€” the 2.7L 2TR-FE has a reachable cylinder block drain plug on the driver's side of the block, while the 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 block drain is buried and most people skip it. The V6 also holds roughly a quart more coolant than the four-cylinder; confirm capacity in the manual.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and let the engine cool completely. Never open a hot cooling system.
  2. Lift the front of the truck and set it on jack stands under the frame rails. Leave the floor jack lightly loaded as a backup.
  3. Remove the lower engine splash shield / air dam under the radiator using 10 mm and 12 mm sockets plus plastic push-pin clips. On TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro, remove the front skid plate (10/12/14 mm).
  4. Slide the drain pan under the driver's side of the radiator and lay cardboard over the crossmember to guide flow.
  5. Remove the radiator cap from the radiator filler neck (the cap on the radiator itself, not the overflow bottle) so the system can vent and drain freely.
  6. Locate the plastic drain cock at the lower driver's side corner of the radiator. Slip a length of 3/8 in hose over the nipple, then turn the petcock counterclockwise about a half turn by hand โ€” use smooth-jaw pliers only if it is stuck, and do not force it.
  7. Let the radiator drain fully, about 1.5 gallons. Expect it not to drain the whole system; a fair amount stays in the block and heater core.
  8. Optional for a more complete change: remove the cylinder block drain plug (driver's side of the block on the 2TR-FE; access on the 2GR-FKS is tight) and let the block drain, then reinstall it with a new gasket. If access looks bad, skip it and plan a second drain-and-fill later.
  9. Suck the old coolant out of the plastic overflow reservoir with a baster or extractor and wipe it clean.
  10. Close the drain cock hand tight and reinstall the block plug if you pulled it. Confirm both are snug and dry.
  11. Fit the spill-free funnel with the correct adapter to the radiator neck and pour in Toyota pink premixed SLLC. Fill slowly so the block can take it; squeeze the upper radiator hose a few times to help air move.
  12. Start the engine with the funnel still in place and the heater set to full hot, fan on low. Let it idle and watch the funnel โ€” the level will drop as air purges and the thermostat opens. Keep the funnel topped up.
  13. Once the upper hose is hot, both cooling fans have cycled, and no more bubbles rise for a couple of minutes, shut the engine off. Drain the funnel back into the neck and install the radiator cap.
  14. Fill the overflow reservoir to the FULL line, not above.
  15. Reinstall the splash shield and/or skid plate, lower the truck, and wipe the area clean.
  16. Drive the truck through a full warm-up cycle, then recheck the reservoir level when cold the next morning. Top up as needed โ€” some air will still work its way out over the first day or two.
