Tools you need for water pump on a 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma

Moderate · 2.5-4 hours for a DIYer, plus cool-down time · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 10 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 12 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  3. 14 mm long-handle wrench for belt tensioner
  4. Hose clamp pliers
  5. 3/8 in torque wrench, 5-80 ft-lb

Good news on the 3rd-gen Tacoma: both the 2.7L 2TR-FE and 3.5L 2GR-FKS use an externally mounted, serpentine-belt-driven water pump, so you never open the timing cover or touch the chain. Ninety percent of the effort is access - draining coolant, pulling the plastic fan shroud, getting the mechanical fan and clutch off, and releasing the automatic belt tensioner. Once the pulley is out of the way it's a handful of 10 mm and 12 mm bolts.

The two things people get wrong: fan-clutch nuts and coolant. Crack the four 10 mm fan nuts loose while the belt is still on, because once the belt is off the pulley just spins. And refill only with Toyota Super Long Life pink coolant, then burp it properly with the heater on full hot - most 'the new pump is bad' complaints are just trapped air.

Differences within the 2016-2023 generation

Both engines use the same core sizes: 10 mm fan-clutch nuts, 10/12 mm water pump bolts, 14 mm belt tensioner. The 2.7L 2TR-FE is a roomier four-cylinder bay with fewer brackets in the way, while the 3.5L 2GR-FKS is tighter on the passenger side and often requires moving an idler pulley or bracket for clearance. Pump gaskets and coolant capacity differ by engine, so buy the pump kit and hose clamps by engine code.

Torque specs

Water pump mounting bolts (M6, 10 mm head) - both enginesverify in the service manual (typical M6 into aluminum: ~9 ft-lb / 12 Nm)
Water pump mounting bolts (M8, 12 mm head)verify in the service manual (typical M8 into aluminum: ~15-18 ft-lb / 21-24 Nm)
Fan clutch-to-pulley nuts (10 mm)verify in the service manual
Fan shroud bolts (10 mm)verify in the service manual (snug only, plastic)
Radiator drain cockHand tight only - plastic
Thermostat housing boltsverify in the service manual

How the job goes

  1. Let the engine cool completely. Chock the rear wheels, lift the front and support it on jack stands. Remove the plastic engine cover and, if fitted, the lower splash shield/skid plate.
  2. Remove the radiator cap (cold only), then open the plastic drain cock at the lower driver-side corner of the radiator and drain into a pan. Drain the reservoir too. Recover roughly 1.5-2 gallons.
  3. Unbolt the upper radiator hose bracket and the plastic fan shroud (10 mm bolts plus clips). On some trims you must free the upper hose from the shroud first with hose clamp pliers.
  4. Crack the four 10 mm fan-clutch nuts loose while the serpentine belt is still on (belt tension holds the pulley). If they won't budge, hold the pulley with a strap wrench or fan holder.
  5. Rotate the automatic belt tensioner with a 14 mm wrench or belt tool, slip the serpentine belt off, and note or photograph the routing.
  6. Remove the four fan nuts fully and lift the fan and clutch assembly out with the shroud. Watch the radiator core - it dents easily.
  7. Remove the water pump pulley (it may just lift off the pump hub once the fan is out), then remove any brackets, the alternator or idler, and hoses that block access to the pump.
  8. Remove the water pump bolts - mixed 10 mm and 12 mm heads. Keep them in order; they are different lengths and going in the wrong hole can bottom out or leak.
  9. Break the pump free with light prying at the casting ear only. Scrape the old gasket off the aluminum block face with a plastic or brass scraper, then wipe with parts cleaner. Do not use a steel blade or a die grinder.
  10. Fit the new gasket/O-ring dry (unless the pump maker specifies otherwise), set the pump on, and start all bolts by hand. Torque in a criss-cross pattern in two passes to spec.
  11. Reinstall the pulley, fan/clutch, shroud, brackets and hoses. Replace any spring clamp that feels weak. Route the belt exactly as photographed and confirm it is seated in every groove before releasing the tensioner.
  12. Close the drain cock hand-tight. Fill slowly with Toyota pink SLLC using a spill-free funnel; squeeze the upper hose to help purge air.
  13. Start the engine with the funnel in place, heater on full hot, and let it reach operating temperature until the thermostat opens and the level drops. Top off, then fill the reservoir to the FULL line.
  14. Cap it, check for leaks at the pump and hoses, then re-check the coolant level cold the next day and again after a few drive cycles.

Watch out

Socket sizes (10, 12, 14 mm) and the belt-driven, externally mounted pump layout are correct for both 3rd-gen Tacoma engines, but exact bolt counts, lengths and all torque values should be confirmed against the Toyota service manual or the instruction sheet in your pump kit.

Frequently asked

Is the Tacoma water pump driven by the timing chain?

No. On both the 2.7L 2TR-FE and 3.5L 2GR-FKS the pump is bolted to the outside of the engine and driven by the serpentine belt, so you don't need to open the timing cover or re-time anything.

How much coolant does a 3rd gen Tacoma take?

Plan on roughly 2 to 2.5 gallons of pre-mixed Toyota pink Super Long Life Coolant for a drain-and-refill; the 3.5L holds a bit more than the 2.7L. Buy an extra gallon for burping and topping off.

Do I have to remove the radiator or fan to change the pump?

The radiator can stay. You do need to remove the plastic fan shroud and the mechanical fan/clutch assembly to get the water pump pulley out of the way.

What are the signs the water pump is failing on a Tacoma?

Pink crust or wet drips at the front of the engine below the pulley, a whine or growl that changes with rpm, weep-hole seepage, or coolant loss with no visible hose leak. Play in the pulley when you rock it by hand means the bearing is on the way out.
