This is one of the easiest jobs on a 3rd-gen Tacoma. The battery sits right at the front passenger corner of the engine bay, the terminals are 10 mm, and the only awkward part is the hold-down: a long threaded J-hook rod with a 12 mm nut that you cannot reach with a shallow socket. A 12 mm deep socket on a 6 inch extension makes it a two-minute job instead of a knuckle-busting one.

Nothing about it changes between the 2.7L 2TR-FE and the 3.5L 2GR-FKS, and Toyota does not require any battery registration or scan-tool reset — unlike many European vehicles. The mistake people make is buying the wrong group size or a 24F with the posts reversed; the OEM size is Group 24F, and if the positive post ends up on the wrong side the cables won't reach without strain. The second most common mistake is cranking the hold-down nut down hard and cracking the battery case.

Differences within the 2016-2023 generation

No difference: both the 2.7L 2TR-FE and 3.5L 2GR-FKS use 10 mm terminal nuts, a 12 mm hold-down nut and a Group 24F battery in the same location. TRD Pro and off-road trims are identical; only the battery brand/CCA rating varies from the factory.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, turn the ignition fully off, remove the key/fob from the cabin, and open the hood. Let the truck sit a minute so modules go to sleep.
  2. If you want to keep presets, plug a memory saver into the OBD-II port under the driver's dash before disconnecting anything.
  3. Put on gloves and eye protection. The battery is at the front passenger corner of the engine bay.
  4. Loosen the negative (-) terminal nut with the 10 mm socket, twist the clamp free and set it aside where it cannot fall back on the post. Use a terminal puller if it is stuck.
  5. Loosen the positive (+) terminal nut with the 10 mm socket, lift off the clamp, and tuck it aside. Flip the red cover back over the post if equipped.
  6. Fit the 12 mm deep socket with a 6 in extension onto the hold-down nut on the threaded rod at the outboard or inboard side of the battery, and run it off. Lift out the J-hook rod and the top clamp bar, and keep the rod from dropping into the fender.
  7. Lift the battery straight up and out with a carry strap, keeping it level. Watch the hood latch cable and the fuse block on the way out.
  8. Clean the tray with a baking soda/water mix, rinse and dry it, then wire-brush the hold-down bar, rod and nut.
  9. Clean both cable clamps inside and out with the terminal brush. Confirm the new battery is Group 24F and that the positive post is on the same side as the old one (posts to the front of the truck, positive toward the fender).
  10. Set the new battery squarely in the tray, refit the top clamp bar and J-hook rod, and tighten the 12 mm nut until the battery cannot rock. Do not overtighten — you will crack the case.
  11. Install the positive (+) clamp first, push it fully down on the post, and tighten the 10 mm nut to 48 in-lb. Then install the negative (-) clamp and tighten to the same spec.
  12. Wiggle-test both clamps by hand; they should not move on the posts. Spray terminal protectant, remove the memory saver, and close the hood.
  13. Start the truck. Reset the clock and radio if needed, and let it idle a couple of minutes so the ECM relearns idle. Drive normally; the tire pressure and steering angle systems relearn on their own.
