Differences within the 2016-2023 generation

Nothing in this job changes between the 2.7L 2TR-FE and the 3.5L 2GR-FKS, or between 2WD and 4WD: same 10 in (254 mm) rear drums, same shoes, same 21 mm lug nuts and 83 ft-lb torque. Wheel diameter (16, 17 or 18 in) and whether the wheel is steel or alloy only affect whether you want a thin-wall 21 mm socket to avoid scuffing the wheel. Front brakes do differ by trim, with larger front rotors on some 3.5L 4WD and TRD models.

How the job goes

  1. Confirm what you have: look through a rear wheel. If you see a drum with a smooth outer shell and two small threaded holes in the face, you have factory rear drums and there are no pads or rotors. Only trucks with an aftermarket rear disc conversion will have calipers back there.
  2. Park on level ground, chock the front wheels, and break the 21 mm lug nuts loose about a quarter turn while the tires are still loaded.
  3. Jack the rear axle under the differential or axle tube, set jack stands under the frame rails or axle tubes, and lower onto them. Remove both rear wheels.
  4. Release the parking brake pedal fully. The drum will not come off with the parking brake set.
  5. Try pulling the drum off by hand. If it is stuck, remove the rubber plug from the backing plate access slot and back the star adjuster off with a brake spoon so the shoes retract past the wear ridge.
  6. Still stuck? Thread two M8 x 1.25 bolts into the two threaded holes in the drum face and tighten them alternately a half turn at a time. The drum will walk off evenly. Rust between the drum and axle flange is the usual culprit; a few hammer taps around the hub face help.
  7. Photograph the assembled brake before touching it. Left and right are mirror images and the adjuster and springs are easy to reinstall wrong.
  8. Remove the upper return springs with brake spring pliers, then the hold-down cups and pins with the hold-down tool, then lift the shoes, adjuster and lower spring out as an assembly.
  9. Unhook the parking brake cable from the lever on the rear shoe and transfer the lever to the new shoe if your kit does not include one.
  10. Clean the backing plate with a wire brush and brake cleaner. Check the wheel cylinder: peel back each dust boot, and if it is wet with fluid, replace the cylinder before going further.
  11. Smear a thin film of high-temp brake lube on the six raised shoe contact pads on the backing plate and on the adjuster screw threads. Keep grease off the friction surfaces.
  12. Screw the adjuster fully closed, assemble the new shoes with new hardware, reattach the parking brake cable, and fit the hold-down pins and cups.
  13. Wash the machining oil off new drums with brake cleaner, slide them on, and turn the star adjuster out until the drum just begins to drag as you spin it, then back it off until the drum spins free with a light scuff. Do both sides the same.
  14. Refit the wheels, torque the lug nuts in a star pattern to 83 ft-lb, then lower the truck.
  15. Pump the brake pedal several times until it is firm, then set and release the parking brake five to ten times to let the self-adjuster take up slack. Check that the parking brake holds on a slope.
  16. Bed the new shoes: 10-15 moderate stops from about 30 mph on a quiet road, then drive a few miles without heavy braking to cool them. Re-torque the lug nuts after roughly 50 miles.
