Tools you need for wiper blades on a 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma

Easy ยท 10-15 minutes ยท Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. Small flat-blade screwdriver (release tab)
  2. Needle-nose pliers, optional for stiff hooks
  3. Folded shop towel for windshield protection
  4. 14 mm socket, only if removing arms

This is about as easy as 3rd-gen Tacoma maintenance gets. Both arms use the old-school J-hook end, so there are no adapters, clips, or pinch tabs to figure out โ€” squeeze the release tab, slide the blade off the hook, slide the new one on. Driver side is 26 in, passenger side is 18 in on every 2016-2023 Tacoma, 2.7 L or 3.5 L, SR through TRD Pro, and there is no rear wiper on any cab configuration.

The one thing people get wrong is letting the bare arm spring back onto the glass. Those arms are strongly sprung and a metal arm end hitting a cold windshield will chip or star it. Put a folded towel on the glass before you pull the old blade and leave it there until the new one is clicked in. Second most common mistake: not cleaning the windshield first, then blaming the new blades for chatter that's really old wax and road film.

Differences within the 2016-2023 generation

No difference between the 2.7 L 2TR-FE and 3.5 L 2GR-FKS, or between Access Cab and Double Cab โ€” all 2016-2023 Tacomas use the same 26 in driver / 18 in passenger J-hook blades and the same 14 mm wiper arm nuts.

How the job goes

  1. Park with the wipers in their rest position and turn the ignition fully off so the wipers can't cycle.
  2. Pop the hood or leave it closed โ€” the Tacoma's arms lift far enough off the glass without service mode; there is no dedicated wiper service position on this truck.
  3. Lift the driver-side arm away from the glass until it locks upright, and lay a folded towel on the windshield beneath it as insurance.
  4. Rotate the blade so it sits roughly perpendicular to the arm, exposing the J-hook connector.
  5. Press the plastic release tab on the underside of the connector (use the small screwdriver if it's stiff) and slide the blade down and out of the hook.
  6. Slide the new 26 in blade up into the hook until the tab clicks; tug it firmly to confirm it's locked.
  7. Rotate the blade parallel to the arm and gently lower the arm back onto the glass โ€” never let it snap down.
  8. Repeat on the passenger side with the 18 in blade.
  9. Clean the windshield and wipe the new rubber with alcohol, then test on a wet screen: cycle the washers and check for chatter, streaking, or a blade hitting the A-pillar trim.
  10. Top off the washer reservoir under the hood on the driver side if needed.

Watch out

The 26 in / 18 in J-hook sizing and the tool-free hook connector are consistent across all 2016-2023 Tacoma cab styles and both engines; double-check your old blades with a tape measure before buying, and look up the wiper arm nut torque in the FSM if you take an arm off.

Frequently asked

What size wiper blades fit a 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma?

26 inches (650 mm) on the driver side and 18 inches (450 mm) on the passenger side, both with hook-type (J-hook) arm connectors. This is the same across all trims and both engines.

Does the 3rd-gen Tacoma have a wiper service position?

No. There's no menu or ignition trick needed โ€” the arms lift far enough off the glass on their own, and the hood doesn't interfere with the parked position.

Do I need any tools to change Tacoma wiper blades?

Strictly, no. A small flat screwdriver helps depress a stiff release tab and needle-nose pliers help twist a corroded blade off the hook, but the swap itself is tool-free.

My new blades chatter or streak โ€” what's wrong?

Usually contaminated glass, not bad blades. Clean the windshield with ammonia-free glass cleaner, wipe the rubber with isopropyl alcohol, and if it persists check that the arm isn't bent or the spring weak, which lets the blade skip on the return stroke.
