On the 5th-gen CR-V this is one of the friendlier jobs under the car. Drop the plastic under-engine shield with a 10 mm socket and a trim tool, turn the plastic petcock at the lower driver-side corner of the radiator by hand, and about 3.5 L comes out. There is no bleed screw and no special procedure — you refill through the radiator neck with a no-spill funnel and idle it with the heater on full until the cooling fan cycles twice.

The thing people get wrong is treating a radiator drain as a full coolant change. Roughly 40% of the coolant stays in the block, heater core and (on the turbo) the turbo lines. The 2.4 L has a block drain bolt that gets most of the rest out; the 1.5 L turbo does not, so if the old coolant is dirty you either do two drains a week apart or have it machine-exchanged. The other common mistake is cranking the petcock shut with pliers and cracking it.

Differences within the 2017-2022 generation

1.5 L turbo (L15BE): radiator petcock and 10 mm shield bolts only, no accessible block drain, so a single drain is partial. 2.4 L K24W: same radiator drain plus a block drain bolt at the rear of the block for a more complete change — confirm the head size (commonly 14 mm) and its torque in the manual. 2020-2022 Hybrid (LFA 2.0): the engine loop drains the same way, but there is a second PCU/inverter loop with its own reservoir and electric pump that is filled and bled separately, usually with the Honda diagnostic tool.

How the job goes

  1. Park level, let the engine cool completely — at least 3 hours, or overnight. The system is pressurized above about 90°C and will spray.
  2. Chock the rear wheels, raise the front with a floor jack at the center subframe point and set jack stands under the factory pinch-weld or subframe points.
  3. Remove the under-engine splash shield: 10 mm bolts around the perimeter plus plastic push-rivets. Pop the rivet centers with a trim tool first, then pull the bodies.
  4. Open the hood and remove the radiator cap (on the radiator itself, driver side) — this lets the system drain fast.
  5. Position the drain pan under the driver-side lower corner of the radiator, then turn the plastic petcock counter-clockwise by hand about 2-3 turns. Do not put a wrench on it and do not fully remove it.
  6. Let it drain fully, roughly 3 to 3.5 L. Meanwhile suck the old coolant out of the plastic overflow reservoir with a syringe; if it is sludgy, unclip the reservoir, remove the hose and rinse it with distilled water.
  7. 2.4 L K24W only, optional: place the pan under the rear of the block and remove the block drain bolt to release another 1 to 1.5 L. Clean the bolt, fit a new washer if it has one, and reinstall. The 1.5 L turbo has no serviceable block drain — plan on a partial change or repeat the drain after a drive cycle.
  8. Close the petcock hand-tight and verify the block drain (if opened) is in.
  9. Fit the no-spill funnel to the radiator neck. Pour Honda Type 2 blue premix slowly into the radiator until it is full and standing in the funnel. Expect roughly 3.5 to 4 L on the first fill; total system capacity is about 5 to 6 L depending on engine — verify the exact figure in the service manual.
  10. Set the climate control to full heat, fan on low, and start the engine. Leave the funnel in place with coolant above the neck and let it idle. Squeeze the upper radiator hose occasionally to push air out.
  11. Keep idling until the thermostat opens (upper hose gets hot) and the radiator fan cycles on and off twice. Top up the funnel as the level drops — this is the entire bleed procedure on this car; there is no bleeder screw on the 1.5T.
  12. Shut off the engine, drain the funnel back into the radiator, remove it and fit the radiator cap hand-tight to the stop.
  13. Fill the overflow reservoir to the MAX line, not above. Reinstall the splash shield, lower the car.
  14. Drive it, then recheck the reservoir level cold the next morning and again after a few days. Top up with premix only. Recycle the old coolant.

Watch out

The 10 mm splash shield bolts, the hand-turn plastic radiator petcock location on the lower driver side, and Honda Type 2 blue coolant are solid for the whole 5th-gen CR-V; exact system capacity, the block drain bolt size on the 2.4 K24W and its torque should be confirmed against the factory service manual for your specific year and engine.
