On the 3rd gen Tacoma the front bearing is a sealed hub unit, so you are not pressing races — you are unbolting a cartridge from the back of the steering knuckle. That sounds easy, and on a clean southern truck it is. On a salted truck the four 17 mm bolts and the hub's press fit in the knuckle bore are the whole job, and a slide hammer type puller plus a long breaker bar are what get you through it.

The mistake people make is skipping the cleanup. Rust scale left in the knuckle bore holds the new hub slightly crooked, and you get bearing noise again within a few thousand miles. The other one is fudging the 30 mm axle nut torque to make the cotter pin hole line up — always go tighter, never looser.

Differences within the 2016-2023 generation

Socket sizes are identical between the 2.7 L 2TR-FE and 3.5 L 2GR-FKS; the engine does not change anything at the hub. The real split is drivetrain: 4WD and 4x4-style trucks have a front drive shaft and need the 30 mm axle nut socket and a new cotter pin, while 2WD/PreRunner trucks have no axle shaft at the hub, so you only deal with the four 17 mm bolts. Hub part numbers also differ between 2WD and 4WD, so order by drivetrain, not just year.

How the job goes

  1. Soak the axle nut, hub bolts and caliper bracket bolts with penetrating oil the day before if possible.
  2. Chock the rear wheels, loosen the 21 mm lug nuts a half turn, then lift the front at the frame and set jack stands. Remove the wheel.
  3. 4WD only: pull the cotter pin and loosen the 30 mm axle nut while the brakes can still be held — or have a helper press the pedal. Back it off but leave it a few turns on the threads.
  4. Remove the 10 mm bolt and unclip the ABS wheel speed sensor wire from the knuckle so it cannot be torn. Route it clear.
  5. Remove the caliper: either the two slide bolts (14 mm) or the two caliper bracket bolts (19 mm head, 87 ft-lb) at the knuckle. Hang the caliper from the spring with a bungee — do not let it dangle on the hose.
  6. Pull the rotor off. If rusted on, thread two bolts into the rotor's puller holes and tighten evenly.
  7. 4WD only: remove the axle nut fully, then tap the CV stub inward with a brass drift or dead blow until the splines are free of the hub.
  8. Remove the brake dust shield if it blocks access (10 mm bolts), then reach behind the knuckle and remove the four 17 mm hub mounting bolts. Use a deep socket with a wobble extension; turn the steering to gain clearance and expect them to be tight and rusty.
  9. Pull the hub out of the knuckle. Bolt the puller plate to the hub studs and use the slide hammer if it is seized. Do not hammer on the ABS ring or the wheel studs.
  10. Wire-brush and clean the knuckle bore and mating face. Knock down any rust ridges with a file so the new hub sits perfectly flat — a cocked hub will whine immediately.
  11. Apply a very light film of anti-seize to the knuckle bore only, then fit the new hub with the ABS sensor port lined up with the sensor hole.
  12. Install the four 17 mm bolts, tighten in a cross pattern, then torque (about 68-77 ft-lb; confirm the figure for your truck).
  13. 4WD only: pull the CV shaft back through the hub, fit the axle nut, and torque to 174 ft-lb with the brakes applied and the wheel on the ground or a helper holding the rotor. Install a NEW cotter pin; if the hole does not line up, tighten slightly further, never loosen below spec.
  14. Refit the dust shield, ABS sensor (snug only — 10 mm bolt into a light thread), rotor and caliper. Torque caliper bracket bolts to 87 ft-lb, slide bolts to 25 ft-lb.
  15. Refit the wheel, lower the truck, torque lug nuts to 83 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  16. Pump the brake pedal until firm before moving. Test drive: the ABS/VSC light may flash briefly then clear once wheel speed is read; if it stays on, scan for codes and check the sensor seating.

Watch out

Lug (21 mm), axle nut (30 mm / 174 ft-lb), hub bolt (17 mm) and caliper bracket (87 ft-lb) figures are solid for the 3rd gen Tacoma, but hub bolt torque and the small dust shield/ABS sensor values should be confirmed against the factory service data for your exact VIN and drivetrain.

How do I know it's the wheel bearing and not a tire?
