Differences within the 2016-2023 generation

Tool sizes are essentially the same on both engines — 14 mm for the tensioner pulley bolt, 10 mm (with some 12 mm) for covers, ducting and shroud hardware. The difference is access and parts: the 3.5L 2GR-FKS has a belt-driven mechanical fan and a shroud you'll usually pull for room, and it uses a different (longer) 6-rib belt than the 2.7L 2TR-FE. Order the belt by VIN, not by eye.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the wheels, shut the engine off and let it cool — the belt runs right next to the exhaust manifold area and the fan can be hot.
  2. Disconnect nothing electrical is required, but if you plan to remove the fan on the V6 it's fine to leave the battery connected; there is no battery registration on this truck.
  3. Photograph the existing belt routing from several angles before anything comes apart. Also find the routing sticker/diagram if present. This is the step people skip and then regret.
  4. Remove the plastic engine cover if fitted (pull up off its grommets, or 10 mm nuts on some trims) and loosen the air intake duct clamp with a screwdriver, then move the intake tube aside for elbow room.
  5. 2.7L: work from the driver's side top and from below. Removing the coolant reservoir and moving the air box gives a clear shot at the tensioner. 3.5L: unbolt the upper radiator support / fan shroud (10 mm, some 12 mm) and unclip wiring and hose retainers so the shroud lifts out — this is what makes the V6 job doable.
  6. Inspect the pulleys: spin the tensioner and any idler by hand and listen for bearing roughness or feel for wobble. Check the old belt's rib depth with a wear gauge if you have one.
  7. Put the 14 mm socket on the tensioner pulley center bolt with a long breaker bar or the serpentine belt tool. Swing the tensioner arm to relieve tension — confirm the direction by watching the arm move away from the belt; do not force it the wrong way.
  8. Holding tension off, slip the belt off the smoothest pulley (usually the alternator or the idler), then let the tensioner return slowly. Never let the bar snap back.
  9. Remove the belt out the front of the engine bay. On the V6 it may need to come out past the fan blades — turn the fan by hand to clear it.
  10. Wipe all pulley grooves clean and check for oil or coolant seepage. Any oil on a pulley will make the new belt squeal and fail early — fix the leak first.
  11. Compare old and new belts side by side: same length, same rib count (6 ribs on both engines). Any difference means the wrong part number.
  12. Route the new belt over every pulley except the one you plan to use last, following your photos. Keep every rib seated in every groove — the crank pulley is the easiest to get half-off.
  13. Swing the tensioner again with the 14 mm and breaker bar, slip the belt onto the final pulley, then release the tensioner slowly onto the belt.
  14. Walk around the whole belt with a flashlight and confirm full seating on every pulley, including the crank pulley bottom that you can only see from underneath.
  15. Reinstall the fan shroud, radiator support, intake duct, coolant reservoir and engine cover. Snug 10/12 mm fasteners, don't overtighten into plastic.
  16. Start the engine and listen for 30-60 seconds with the A/C on and off. Watch the belt track straight. Shut it down and re-inspect. A brief chirp on the first start is normal; sustained squeal means misrouting or a contaminated pulley.
