Two-piston sliding calipers, a separate mounting bracket, and a slip-on rotor with two threaded service holes mean you rarely need anything more exotic than a 14 mm socket, a 19 mm socket, a piston spreader and a torque wrench. There is no electronic parking brake at the front, no relearn procedure and nothing to scan-tool.

The front brakes are the same across the 2.7L and 3.5L and across SR through TRD Pro, so parts selection is easy — just confirm the rotor diameter against your old one before you buy. The thing people get wrong is the hub face: they bolt a new rotor onto a hub that still has a ring of rust and scale, then blame the cheap rotor when the pedal pulses a few thousand miles later. Wire brush that face until it is bare metal and flat.

Differences within the 2016-2023 generation

Front brake hardware and fastener sizes are identical on the 2.7L 2TR-FE and 3.5L 2GR-FKS 3rd gen trucks: 21 mm lug nuts, 14 mm caliper slide-pin bolts, 19 mm caliper bracket bolts. Only the rear differs by trim (drums on some SR/SR5 models, discs on others), which does not affect this job.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, leave the truck in Park with the parking brake set for now. Crack the 21 mm lug nuts loose while the tire is still on the ground.
  2. Siphon about a third of the fluid out of the brake master cylinder reservoir if it is near the full line, then loosely reinstall the cap.
  3. Jack the front up at the crossmember and set jack stands under the frame rails. Remove the front wheels.
  4. Remove the two 14 mm slide-pin bolts on the back of the caliper. Lift the caliper off and hang it from the coil spring with a bungee — never let it dangle on the hose.
  5. Pull the old pads, the anti-rattle shims and the pad support plates out of the mounting bracket. Note which way the wear-indicator pad faces.
  6. Remove the two 19 mm bracket bolts and take the mounting bracket off the knuckle.
  7. Pull the rotor off. If it is stuck, thread M8 x 1.25 bolts evenly into the two service holes and turn them in a little at a time until the rotor pops free. A few dead-blow hits on the rotor face also help.
  8. Wire brush the hub mounting face flat and clean. Any rust ridge here shows up as brake pedal pulse later.
  9. Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner to strip the shipping oil, wipe a very thin film of anti-seize on the hub face only, and fit the rotor. Snug it with one lug nut to hold it flat.
  10. Clean the bracket pad abutment surfaces, fit new stainless support plates, and grease the pad ears and shim backs lightly with silicone brake grease. Keep grease off the friction material and rotor.
  11. Bolt the mounting bracket back on with the 19 mm bolts at roughly 90 ft-lb, then install the pads.
  12. Pull the slide pins out of the caliper boots, wipe them, re-grease with silicone brake grease and reinstall. Replace any split boots.
  13. Compress both caliper pistons squarely with the spreader tool until they bottom, keeping an eye on the reservoir level.
  14. Fit the caliper over the pads and torque the 14 mm slide-pin bolts to about 25 ft-lb.
  15. Repeat on the other side. Reinstall the wheels and torque the 21 mm lug nuts to 83 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  16. With the truck still up, pump the brake pedal until it is firm, check and top the reservoir to the full line with DOT 3, and confirm no fluid leaks.
  17. Lower the truck and bed in the pads: 8 to 10 moderate stops from about 40 mph to 10 mph without coming to a full stop, then drive gently for several minutes to cool them.
