On the 14th-gen F-150 the front strut is a coil-over that bolts to a frame bracket up top with three nuts and to the lower control arm at the bottom with one long through-bolt. If you buy complete pre-assembled struts you never touch a spring compressor, which makes this one of the friendlier suspension jobs on a modern half-ton. Everything is reached from the wheel well and the engine bay — no subframe drops, no ball joint separation.

The part that bites people is the lower through-bolt. It corrodes into the control arm bores, so soak it, and when you put the new strut in, jack the lower arm up to line the holes up instead of trying to muscle the bolt through. The other common mistake is torquing the lower bolt with the suspension hanging free; hold the arm at ride height on a jack when you final-torque it, then get an alignment.

Differences within the 2021-2024 generation

Socket sizes are the same across 2.7/3.5 EcoBoost, 5.0 V8 and PowerBoost — only the strut part number changes with spring rate (PowerBoost and FX4/off-road packages are specific). Raptor and Tremor use Fox shocks with different hardware and, on Raptor live-valve, an electrical connector at the shock body that must be unplugged and transferred. Driver-side upper nut access is tightest on the 3.5 EcoBoost and PowerBoost because of airbox and harness routing.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and loosen the front lug nuts a half turn while the tires are still down.
  2. Raise the front of the truck at the frame rails (not the aluminum body or crossmember plastics) and set both sides on jack stands. Remove both front wheels.
  3. Spray penetrating oil on the lower strut through-bolt and nut, both sides, and let it soak while you work up top.
  4. Open the hood and locate the three upper strut mount nuts on each frame bracket. On the driver side you may need to move the airbox or a harness clip for socket access; use a swivel and extension.
  5. Support the lower control arm with the floor jack so the suspension is held at roughly normal ride height, taking load off the strut.
  6. Unbolt any brake hose or ABS wire bracket clipped to the strut body so nothing gets stretched.
  7. If clearance is tight, disconnect the stabilizer bar link at the lower arm (18 mm nut, hex key in the stud to stop it spinning).
  8. Remove the lower through-bolt: 21 mm socket on the head, 21 mm wrench on the nut. Tap the bolt out with a brass or dead blow hammer; do not hammer directly on the threads.
  9. Remove the three 15 mm upper nuts, then lower the control arm slightly and work the strut assembly down and out through the wheel well.
  10. Compare the new assembly to the old one for spring rate, mount orientation and stud pattern before installing.
  11. Feed the new strut up into the frame bracket, seat the three studs, and start all three nuts by hand.
  12. Jack the lower control arm up until the strut eye lines up with the arm ears, use a punch or pry bar to align, then push the through-bolt in from the correct side.
  13. Snug the lower nut, then torque the upper nuts and the lower bolt to spec with the suspension loaded at ride height (keep the jack under the arm).
  14. Reattach the brake hose/ABS bracket and the stabilizer bar link and torque them.
  15. Repeat on the other side — always replace struts in pairs.
  16. Refit the wheels, lower the truck, and torque lug nuts to 150 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  17. Test drive, re-check the lower bolt torque after 50-100 miles, and get a front alignment.

Lug nut size (22 mm) and 150 ft-lb torque and the 15 mm upper nuts / 21 mm lower through-bolt sizes match the 14th-gen F-150 as built, but verify the lower strut bolt and upper mount torque values in a Ford service manual for your exact trim, since Raptor, Tremor and PowerBoost hardware can differ.

Do I need a spring compressor for 2021-2024 F-150 front struts?

No, if you buy complete strut assemblies with the spring and upper mount already installed. You only need a compressor if you are reusing your original spring on a bare strut, which is not worth the risk on this truck.

What size are the F-150 front strut bolts?
