Tools you need for front struts on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4

Moderate · 2-3 hours for the pair, plus an alignment · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 21 mm socket, 1/2 in drive (lug nuts)
  2. 19 mm socket and wrench, 1/2 in drive
  3. 14 mm socket, 3/8 in drive (upper nuts)
  4. 1/2 in torque wrench, 20-150 ft-lb
  5. Floor jack and 2 jack stands

On the XA50 RAV4, front struts are a straightforward two-bolt-at-the-bottom, three-nuts-at-the-top job. If you buy complete (quick) strut assemblies, you skip the spring compressor entirely and the whole pair is a comfortable afternoon. The two 19 mm bolts at the steering knuckle are the hard part — they are torqued high and often rusted in place in salt states, so soak them and use a long breaker bar rather than rounding them off.

What varies is the strut itself, not the tools. Gas and hybrid, and the softer LE/XLE/Limited versus the Adventure and TRD Off-Road tunes, all use different spring rates and part numbers, so order by exact trim and drivetrain. The mistake people make most often is skipping the alignment, or final-tightening the knuckle bolts with an impact gun and guessing — an under-torqued lower bolt shows up as a clunk over bumps within a few hundred miles.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Socket and bolt sizes are identical between the 2.5 L A25A-FKS gas and the hybrid front suspension. Only the strut part numbers differ: hybrids run stiffer front springs for the extra weight, and Adventure/TRD Off-Road models use their own taller, differently valved struts (TRD units also have unique tuning) — these are not interchangeable with LE/XLE/Limited parts.

Torque specs

Strut-to-steering knuckle bolts/nuts (2 per side)verify in the service manual (typically in the 150-175 ft-lb range on TNGA platforms — do not guess)
Upper strut mount nuts to body (3 per side, M10)verify in the service manual (commonly 29 ft-lb / 39 Nm on Toyota mounts)
Brake hose / ABS wire bracket boltverify in the service manual (small M6-M8, hand-tight plus snug)
Stabilizer link nut (if strut-mounted)verify in the service manual
Wheel lug nuts76 ft-lb (103 Nm)

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and break the front lug nuts loose about a quarter turn while the tires are still down.
  2. Raise the front of the vehicle at the factory front jacking point and set jack stands under the pinch welds or subframe rails. Remove both front wheels.
  3. Under the hood, peel back the hood weatherstrip and pop off the plastic cowl side trim with a nylon pry tool to expose the three 14 mm upper strut mount nuts. Do not remove them yet.
  4. At the wheel, spray penetrating oil on the two strut-to-knuckle bolts and let it soak.
  5. Unbolt the brake hose bracket and ABS sensor wire clip from the strut body (10 mm or 12 mm). Unclip the wire from any strut tabs so nothing is stretched.
  6. If your trim routes the stabilizer link to the strut bracket, hold the stud with a 6 mm hex key and remove the 17 mm nut.
  7. Place a jack under the lower control arm to take the load off the strut, then remove the two 19 mm knuckle bolts — 19 mm socket on one side, 19 mm wrench on the other. Tap them out with a dead blow hammer if they are seized; do not hammer the threads.
  8. Support the knuckle/hub so it cannot hang on the CV joint or brake hose, then remove the three 14 mm upper nuts and lower the strut assembly out through the wheel well.
  9. Compare the new assembly to the old one: mount orientation, spring seat position, and bracket tabs must match. Note which side is left and right.
  10. Feed the new strut up into the tower, align the studs, and start the three upper nuts by hand. Snug them but leave final torque for later.
  11. Lower or lever the knuckle onto the strut flange, insert both knuckle bolts from the factory direction, and install the nuts finger tight. A pry bar helps spread the knuckle slightly if the fit is tight.
  12. Reattach the brake hose bracket, ABS wire clip, and stabilizer link. Confirm the brake hose and wire have full travel with no tension.
  13. Torque the knuckle bolts and the three upper nuts to spec (see torque table), reinstall the wheels, and torque lug nuts to 76 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  14. Refit the cowl trim and hood weatherstrip. Lower the vehicle, bounce the suspension, and re-check upper nut torque.
  15. Drive gently to a shop and have a four-wheel alignment done; also recalibrate the steering angle sensor if the steering feels off-center or a warning light appears.
  16. On Adventure/TRD Off-Road and hybrid models with driver-assist cameras, have Toyota Safety Sense recalibrated if ride height changed noticeably.

Watch out

The 21 mm lug, 19 mm knuckle bolt, and 14 mm upper mount nut sizes are consistent across gas and hybrid XA50 RAV4s, but the exact knuckle bolt torque varies by market service data, so confirm that value in the Toyota service manual before final tightening.

Frequently asked

Do I need a spring compressor to replace RAV4 front struts?

Not if you buy complete strut assemblies with the spring and mount pre-installed. You only need a spring compressor if you are reusing your original spring and top mount on a bare strut cartridge.

What socket sizes do I need for 2019-2024 RAV4 front struts?

21 mm for the lug nuts, 19 mm socket and wrench for the two strut-to-knuckle bolts, and 14 mm for the three upper strut mount nuts. You will also want 10 mm and 12 mm for the brake hose and ABS wire brackets.

Is an alignment required after replacing the struts?

Yes. Removing the strut from the knuckle changes camber and toe, so get a four-wheel alignment right after the job or you will chew up the front tires.

Can I replace just one front strut?

Mechanically yes, but it is a bad idea. A new strut next to a worn one gives uneven damping and body roll, so replace them as a pair on the same axle.
