The DT Ram 1500 makes this job easier than most trucks: the front spring and shock are a single coil-over that bolts in with three nuts up top and one long through-bolt at the bottom. Buy complete (pre-assembled) units and you never touch a spring compressor. The real work is supporting the lower control arm with a second jack and wrestling the unit out through the wheel opening without bending a brake line or ABS wire.

The thing people get wrong is the air-suspension trucks. If you do not put the 4-corner system into service/transport mode before you start, the compressor fights you and you end up with stored faults and a truck that sits crooked; and even with everything done right you need a scan tool to run the ride-height calibration when you are finished. Second most common mistake: skipping the alignment. Pulling the coil-over changes camber and toe enough to eat a front tire.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Fastener sizes are the same across 3.6 Pentastar eTorque, 5.7 Hemi eTorque and 3.0 EcoDiesel — 22 mm lugs, 15 mm upper mount nuts, 21 mm lower through-bolt hardware. What changes is the part: spring rates differ by engine weight (the EcoDiesel and Hemi carry more nose weight than the V6), and trims with the optional 4-corner air suspension use a front air spring/shock module with a quick-connect air line instead of a steel coil, which requires service mode and a ride-height relearn. Off-road and Rebel packages also use their own taller/valved units, so order by VIN.

How the job goes

  1. If equipped with 4-corner air suspension, put the system into Service/Transport mode (Uconnect suspension menu or scan tool) and confirm the compressor will not run. Turn the truck off and, on air trucks, consider disconnecting the 12 V battery negative after the system has bled down.
  2. Loosen the 22 mm lug nuts a quarter turn while the tire is on the ground. Chock the rear wheels.
  3. Raise the front of the truck by the frame rails and set 3-ton jack stands under the frame, not the control arms. Remove both front wheels.
  4. Spray penetrating oil on the lower through-bolt nut and the three upper mount nuts; give it 10-15 minutes.
  5. Move any brake hose brackets, ABS wire clips or inner fender shield fasteners (10 mm bolts / plastic clips) off the shock body so nothing is under tension when the arm drops.
  6. On air-suspension trucks, release the quick-connect air line from the top of the front air spring using a pick/release tool and cap or protect the line. On coil trucks, skip this step.
  7. Place a second jack under the lower control arm near the ball joint and take up the suspension weight.
  8. Remove the stabilizer bar link nut (counterhold the stud with a hex or Torx bit) if you need extra droop.
  9. Remove the three upper mount nuts (15 mm) from the frame bracket at the top of the assembly.
  10. Remove the lower through-bolt: 21 mm socket on one side, 21 mm wrench on the other. Withdraw the long bolt; it may need tapping out with a drift.
  11. Slowly lower the control arm jack until the assembly is free, then maneuver the complete unit out through the wheel opening. Note the orientation of the upper mount studs and any airline or dust boot indexing.
  12. Compare old and new units: height, stud pattern, lower eye width, and on air trucks the port location. Transfer any dust shield or bracket if the new unit does not include one.
  13. Feed the new assembly in, start the three upper studs into the frame bracket and run the nuts on finger tight.
  14. Jack the control arm up until the lower eye lines up with the arm ears, use a drift to align, then slide the through-bolt in from the original direction and start the nut.
  15. Torque the three upper nuts to spec, then torque the lower through-bolt to spec (per the manual, with the suspension loaded at ride height if specified).
  16. Reconnect the stabilizer bar link, reinstall all wire clips, hose brackets and shields you moved.
  17. On air trucks, reconnect the air line until the collar clicks and tug-test it.
  18. Repeat on the other side — always replace struts in pairs.
  19. Mount the wheels, snug the lug nuts in a star pattern, lower the truck, then torque lug nuts to 130 ft-lb (176 Nm).
  20. On air trucks, exit Service mode, start the engine, let the compressor refill and then run the ride-height calibration with a scan tool. Check for suspension fault messages.
  21. Bounce test, check for clearance at full lock both directions, then drive gently and get a front-end alignment (toe and camber) within a day or two. Re-torque lug nuts after 50-100 miles.

Watch out

Lug nuts are definitely 22 mm at 130 ft-lb; the upper mount nuts are 15 mm and the lower through-bolt hardware is 21 mm on the trucks I have worked on, but late-build and air-suspension variants can differ, so check your own fasteners and get the torque values from the FCA/Stellantis service manual for your build date.
