On the DT-generation Ram 1500 this is a straightforward tensioner-and-swap job made awkward by packaging. The front of the engine is boxed in by the cooling module and fan, so most of your time goes into pulling the engine cover, intake duct and often the upper fan shroud just to get a breaker bar on the tensioner. Once you can reach the tensioner, the belt itself is off in two minutes.

The thing people get wrong is the belt itself. On eTorque trucks the accessory belt also has to start the engine through the 48-volt belt-starter-generator, so it is a specific heavy-duty construction — a cheap generic belt of the right length will chirp, slip during auto start/stop restarts, and fail early. Order by VIN. The second most common mistake is routing: eTorque and non-eTorque Hemis are not the same, so photograph the original and check the under-hood label before the old belt comes off.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

5.7 Hemi eTorque tensioners generally take an 18 mm socket on the pulley center bolt and can often be reached from above with a long extension and swivel. The 3.6 Pentastar eTorque tensioner is typically 15 mm and sits low behind the cooling module, so an offset serpentine belt tool handle is close to mandatory. The 3.0 EcoDiesel is the tightest of the three: plan on a crowfoot/offset belt tool and, on many trucks, loosening or tipping the cooling module, and be aware some EcoDiesels run a separate secondary belt for an accessory.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the wheels, shut the ignition off and take the key fob away from the truck. Let the engine cool — the belt runs right beside the exhaust manifolds.
  2. On eTorque trucks, disconnect the 12 V negative battery cable (10 mm) and wait a few minutes. The 48 V belt-starter-generator can drive the belt; you do not want the system waking up with your hands in the pulleys.
  3. Photograph the existing belt routing and compare it to the under-hood routing label. Do this before anything comes off — the eTorque routing is not the same as a non-eTorque Hemi.
  4. Remove the plastic engine cover and the air intake duct/resonator that blocks your view (push-pin retainers, hose clamp screws, 8 mm).
  5. Improve access to the tensioner: on the 3.6 and 3.0 you will usually need to remove the upper fan shroud or unbolt the cooling module and tip it forward slightly. On the 5.7 you can often reach the tensioner from above with a long extension and swivel.
  6. Fit the correct tool to the tensioner: 18 mm on the 5.7 Hemi tensioner pulley bolt, 15 mm on the 3.6 Pentastar, or use the serpentine belt tool's offset handle and crowfoot on the 3.0 EcoDiesel where a socket will not fit.
  7. Rotate the tensioner in the direction that releases the belt (it will only swing one way), hold it, and slip the belt off the smoothest accessible pulley — usually an idler or the A/C compressor. Let the tensioner return slowly; do not let it snap back.
  8. Work the old belt out around the fan. Rolling it off the water pump last and pulling it up between the fan blades and the radiator is usually the easiest path.
  9. Spin every pulley by hand: tensioner, idler, water pump, A/C, and the BSG/alternator. Any roughness, wobble or bearing noise means replace that component now, not after the new belt is on.
  10. Clean oil and glaze out of the pulley grooves with brake cleaner and a rag. Fix the leak if a groove is oily — oil will kill the new belt.
  11. Feed the new belt in and route it per your photo. Put it on all pulleys except one, then rotate the tensioner and slip the last loop into place. Confirm the belt is centred and every rib is seated in every groove — a belt one groove off will shred within minutes.
  12. Release the tensioner and check that the tensioner arm indicator sits within its wear window (if equipped). Refit the shroud, cooling module, intake duct and engine cover, torquing what you removed.
  13. Reconnect the battery. Start the engine and watch the belt for 30-60 seconds for tracking, chirping or wobble. On eTorque trucks, expect the auto start/stop to be temporarily disabled until the battery relearns; drive the truck and it will restore itself.
  14. Recheck belt tracking after a short drive and a heat cycle.

Watch out

The 18 mm tensioner bolt on the 5.7 Hemi and 15 mm on the 3.6 Pentastar match the common sizes for these engine families, but Mopar changed tensioner suppliers within this generation, so test-fit 15, 16 and 18 mm before you commit, and verify all torque values in the FCA/Stellantis service manual for your VIN.

Can I use any aftermarket belt on an eTorque Ram 1500?

Use an OE-spec belt for eTorque. That belt transmits engine-start torque from the 48 V belt-starter-generator, and standard-duty belts slip and squeal under those loads. Order by VIN so you get the eTorque part rather than the non-eTorque length.

What size socket releases the belt tensioner on a 5.7 Hemi Ram 1500?

Most 5.7 Hemi tensioners in this generation use an 18 mm socket on the pulley center bolt with a 1/2 in drive breaker bar. Test-fit 15 and 16 mm too, since suppliers varied through the generation.

Do I have to remove the fan or radiator shroud?

On the 5.7 you can usually work from above with a long extension and swivel. On the 3.6 and especially the 3.0 EcoDiesel most people remove the upper fan shroud or loosen the cooling module to get a tool on the tensioner and to snake the belt out.

Why does auto start/stop stop working after I reconnect the battery?

The DT needs a battery-state relearn before it will re-enable auto start/stop. It is normal for the feature to be unavailable for some drive cycles; no scan tool or battery registration is required for a belt replacement.
