Tools you need for front wheel bearing on a 2019-2024 Ram 1500

Moderate ยท 2-3 hours per side for a first-timer; 1-1.5 hours if the hub comes out easily ยท Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 22 mm lug socket, 1/2 in drive
  2. 36 mm axle nut socket, 1/2 in drive
  3. 21 mm socket, 1/2 in drive (hub/caliper bolts)
  4. 1/2 in breaker bar and 250 ft-lb torque wrench
  5. Slide hammer with hub puller adapter

On the DT-generation Ram 1500 the front bearing is a sealed bolt-on hub unit with the ABS speed sensor built into it, so there is no pressing, no shims and no bearing preload to set. The real work is breaking the 36 mm axle nut loose on a 4x4 and then getting a hub that has rust-welded itself into the aluminum-and-steel knuckle bore to come out in one piece. Budget for a slide hammer with a bolt-on hub puller โ€” that one tool is the difference between a two-hour job and a ruined afternoon.

Engine choice makes no difference here; 2WD versus 4x4 does. A 2WD DT has no axle shaft or axle nut, so it is essentially caliper off, rotor off, four bolts and out. The mistake people make most often is not cleaning the rust scale out of the knuckle bore before fitting the new hub: the unit sits slightly cocked, you get runout, a vibration and a bearing that howls again in a year.

The replacement unit โ€” ABS sensor is built in and not serviceable separately.
Partsshop
Axle nut
New nut recommended on 4x4
The axle nut is a prevailing-torque/flanged nut that is best replaced.
Partsshop

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Tool sizes are identical across the 3.6 Pentastar eTorque, 5.7 Hemi eTorque and 3.0 EcoDiesel โ€” the hub, knuckle and 22 mm lug nuts are shared. The only real split is drivetrain: 4x4 trucks need the 36 mm axle nut socket and heavy breaker bar, 2WD trucks do not. Trucks with the larger/HD brake package may use a different caliper bracket bolt head, so check 18 mm and 21 mm before ordering tools.

How the job goes

  1. The night before, spray penetrating oil on the hub-to-knuckle bolt heads from behind the knuckle and around the hub flange seam.
  2. Chock the rear wheels, loosen the front lug nuts a half turn with the truck on the ground, then lift at the frame and set jack stands. Remove the wheel.
  3. On 4x4: have a helper hold the brake pedal, or reinstall two lug nuts and wedge a pry bar through them, then break the 36 mm axle nut loose with a breaker bar or impact. Remove the nut and washer.
  4. Unbolt the brake caliper (guide pins or bracket bolts), lift the caliper off the rotor and hang it from the coil spring with a bungee โ€” never let it hang by the hose.
  5. Remove the caliper mounting bracket if it is separate, then pull the rotor off. If rust-bonded, tap the friction face with a hammer or use the threaded jacking holes.
  6. Unclip the ABS wheel speed sensor harness from the knuckle and unplug the connector; on this truck the sensor is part of the hub, so the whole pigtail comes out with it.
  7. Remove the dust shield fasteners if they block access to the hub bolts.
  8. From behind the knuckle, remove the hub-to-knuckle bolts (21 mm on most DT trucks โ€” confirm yours before buying). Keep them if they are in good shape; note any thread-locking coating.
  9. On 4x4, tap the axle shaft inward with a brass or dead-blow hammer to free the splines from the hub.
  10. Bolt the slide hammer puller to the hub flange and pull the hub straight out. Work the joint with penetrating oil and gentle prying if it is stubborn; do not heat or hammer the knuckle bore out of round.
  11. Wire-brush and clean the knuckle bore and mounting face until the new hub can sit flat with no rust scale. Wipe with brake cleaner.
  12. Apply a thin film of anti-seize to the knuckle bore only โ€” keep it off the bolt seating faces and the hub's flat mating surface.
  13. Fit the new hub, start all the bolts by hand, then torque them evenly in a criss-cross pattern to spec.
  14. On 4x4, slide the axle shaft through the hub, fit the washer and new axle nut and torque to spec while holding the brake.
  15. Reinstall the dust shield, route and clip the ABS harness exactly as it came off, and plug in the connector.
  16. Refit the rotor, caliper bracket and caliper, torque the fasteners, then pump the brake pedal until firm.
  17. Refit the wheel and lower the truck. Torque the lug nuts to 130 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  18. Drive slowly and check that the ABS and traction control lights go out. If a light stays on, scan for codes โ€” a pinched or unseated sensor connector is the usual cause.

Watch out

Lug nuts (22 mm, 130 ft-lb) and the 36 mm 4x4 axle nut are solid; hub-to-knuckle and caliper bolt head sizes are commonly 21 mm but vary slightly by build and brake package, so test-fit 18 mm and 21 mm sockets before you start and confirm all torque values in the FCA/Stellantis service information for your VIN.

Frequently asked

Do you need a press to replace a front wheel bearing on a 2019-2024 Ram 1500?

No. The DT uses a sealed hub/bearing assembly that bolts to the steering knuckle, so it is a bolt-off, bolt-on part. You only need pulling tools if the old hub is corroded into the knuckle bore.

What size is the front axle nut on a 4x4 Ram 1500 DT?

36 mm, 1/2 inch drive. Use a 6-point impact socket and a long breaker bar or impact wrench, and hold the brake or lock the hub with a pry bar through two lug studs while you break it loose.

Does the front hub include the ABS sensor?

Yes, the wheel speed sensor is integrated into the hub assembly on the DT and comes with the new unit. That also means a failed speed sensor usually means replacing the whole hub.

Do I need an alignment after replacing the front hub?

No. Nothing that sets camber, caster or toe is disturbed, so the alignment is unchanged. If the truck pulls or the steering wheel is off-center afterward, something else was loosened.
