Differences within the 2017-2022 generation

Socket and bit sizes are identical across the 1.5T, 2.4 K24 and the hybrid: 19 mm lugs, 17 mm caliper bracket bolts, 12 mm guide pin bolts, 8 mm hex rotor screws. What differs is the rotor itself — front rotor diameter and thickness change with drivetrain and trim, so match parts to the VIN. Hybrids also use an electric servo brake system, so keep the fluid level in range and avoid pumping the pedal with the system awake while pads are out.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and loosen the front lug nuts about a quarter turn with the 19 mm socket while the tires are still down.
  2. Open the hood and crack the brake fluid reservoir cap so retracting pistons do not build pressure; do not let fluid overflow onto paint.
  3. Lift the front at the pinch-weld jack point, set jack stands under the reinforced pinch welds, and remove both front wheels.
  4. Spray penetrating oil on the two rotor retaining screws and the rotor center, and let it soak while you work on the caliper.
  5. Remove the two 12 mm guide pin bolts, lift the caliper body off the bracket, and hang it from the coil spring with a bungee — never let it dangle on the hose.
  6. Slide the old pads and their shims out of the bracket, noting which way the wear-indicator pad faces.
  7. Remove the two 17 mm caliper bracket bolts and take the bracket off the knuckle.
  8. Break the rotor retaining screws loose with the 8 mm hex bit, ideally in a hand impact driver so you do not round them out.
  9. Pull the rotor off; if it is rust-bonded, tap the friction face alternately with a hammer or run bolts into the two threaded puller holes to jack it off.
  10. Wire-brush or disc the hub face until it is bare metal, then wipe it clean and apply a very thin film of anti-seize to the hub face only.
  11. Wash both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove the shipping oil, then fit it and snug the retaining screws to about 9.8 Nm.
  12. Clean the caliper bracket pad abutment surfaces, apply a thin film of caliper grease there, reinstall the bracket and torque the 17 mm bolts to spec.
  13. Pull each guide pin from its boot, wipe it, re-grease with silicone caliper lube, and check the rubber boots for tears; replace the caliper if a boot is split.
  14. Compress the caliper piston fully with the spreader or C-clamp, using an old pad as a pressure plate.
  15. Install the new shims and pads with grease on the pad ears and shim backs only, keeping all lubricant off the friction surfaces.
  16. Lower the caliper body over the pads and torque the 12 mm guide pin bolts to spec.
  17. Repeat on the other side, then reinstall the wheels and torque the lug nuts to 80 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  18. Before moving the vehicle, pump the brake pedal until it is firm, then top the fluid to the MAX line and re-fit the cap.
  19. Bed the brakes in: from about 35 mph, do 6-8 moderate stops down to 10 mph with no full stops, then drive several minutes without using the brakes to cool them.
