Tools you need for tire rotation on a 2017-2022 Honda CR-V

Easy · 45-60 minutes · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 19 mm socket, 1/2 in drive
  2. Torque wrench, 1/2 in, 80 lb-ft
  3. Floor jack, 2 ton minimum
  4. Jack stands, pair or four
  5. Breaker bar or 1/2 in ratchet

On the 5th-gen CR-V this is about as easy as a rotation gets. Every trim from the 2017 LX 2.4 to the 2022 Hybrid Touring uses 19 mm lug nuts on M12 x 1.5 studs at 80 lb-ft, and the pinch-weld jack points are easy to reach with a normal floor jack. There are no wheel locks from the factory and no hub caps to pry off on alloy wheels.

The thing people get wrong is the TPMS. Honda uses indirect TPMS on this generation, meaning the system watches wheel speeds rather than reading pressure sensors, so after a rotation or any pressure change you have to run the TPMS Calibration from the vehicle settings menu. Skip it and you'll chase a low-pressure light that has nothing to do with your tires. The second common mistake is using an impact gun to tighten - that's how you end up with stretched studs and a shimmy.

ItemType
Wheel chocks
Pair, rubber or plastic
Block the wheels staying on the ground before lifting either end.
Safetyshop
Breaker bar
1/2 in drive, 18-24 in
Loosen lug nuts while the wheels are still on the ground.
Requiredshop
Lug nut socket
19 mm 6-point, 1/2 in drive (thin-wall or protective sleeve for alloys)
All 5th-gen CR-V lug nuts, including the Hybrid, are 19 mm.
Requiredshop
Floor jack
2 ton minimum, low profile helps
Lift the vehicle at the pinch-weld jack points.
Requiredshop
Jack stands
2 ton pair (four is better for a full rotation)
Support the car safely while wheels are off; never work under a jack alone.
Safetyshop
Jack pad / pinch weld adapter
Slotted rubber puck
Protects the CR-V's pinch weld seam from crushing.
Recommendedshop
Torque wrench
1/2 in drive, 20-150 lb-ft range
Final tightening of lug nuts to 80 lb-ft in a star pattern.
Requiredshop
Tire pressure gauge
Digital or dial, 0-60 psi
Set pressures to the door-jamb spec before TPMS calibration.
Requiredshop
Air compressor or inflator
12 V portable or shop air
Top up pressures; rear tires often need adjusting after rotation.
Recommendedshop
Tread depth gauge
0-25/32 in
Check wear differences front to rear while the wheels are off.
Recommendedshop
Wire brush
Small hand brush
Clean rust and dirt off the hub face so the wheel sits flat.
Recommendedshop
Anti-seize or brake grease
Thin film on hub center flange only
Prevents alloy wheels seizing to the hub; keep it off studs and mating faces.
Consumablesshop
Nitrile gloves

Brake dust and grime.
Safetyshop
Cross-thread-safe wheel hanger stud
M12 x 1.5 guide pin
Helps hang a wheel straight if you are working alone; CR-V studs are M12 x 1.5.

Differences within the 2017-2022 generation

Nothing changes by engine: the 1.5 turbo, 2.4 K24 and 2.0 Hybrid all use 19 mm lug nuts, five studs, and 80 lb-ft. Only wheel and tire size varies - 235/65R17 on LX/EX, 235/60R18 on EX-L/Touring and Hybrid - which changes door-jamb pressures slightly, not the tools.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, engine off, transmission in Park, parking brake set. On Hybrid and EX-L trims with the electric brake, confirm the brake holds before lifting.
  2. Chock the wheels at the opposite end of the car from the end you are about to lift.
  3. With the wheels still on the ground, break each lug nut loose about a half turn using the 19 mm socket and breaker bar.
  4. Lift one end of the vehicle at the reinforced pinch-weld jack points (just behind the front wheels, just ahead of the rear wheels) and set jack stands under the pinch welds or the subframe rails. Repeat for the other end if doing all four at once.
  5. Remove the lug nuts and pull each wheel. Note position with chalk on the inside of the wheel if you like.
  6. Wire-brush rust and dirt from the hub faces; a thin smear of anti-seize on the center hub flange only, never on the stud threads or the wheel-to-hub mating surface.
  7. Rotate the tires: non-directional tires, use the X (crossed) pattern - fronts go to the opposite rear corners, rears come straight forward. Directional tires (arrow on sidewall), swap front to rear on the same side only.
  8. Hand-thread all five lug nuts, seat the wheel against the hub, then snug in a star pattern.
  9. Lower the vehicle until the tires just touch, then torque the nuts to 80 lb-ft in a star pattern. Finish lowering and remove the jack.
  10. Set all four tires to the pressure on the driver's door jamb label (typically 32-33 psi cold for 235/65R17 and 235/60R18; check your label).
  11. Recalibrate the TPMS: with the vehicle on but not moving, go to the driver's information interface or audio touchscreen Settings > Vehicle > TPMS Calibration, and select Calibrate. Drive normally for about 30 minutes above roughly 30 mph to complete the learn.
  12. Re-check lug torque after 50-100 miles.

Watch out

The 19 mm lug nut size, M12 x 1.5 studs and 80 lb-ft (108 Nm) torque are standard across all 2017-2022 CR-V trims including the Hybrid; confirm your tire pressure on the driver's door jamb label since it varies with wheel size and trim.

Frequently asked

What size socket for Honda CR-V lug nuts?

19 mm, 1/2 inch drive, on all 2017-2022 CR-V models including the Hybrid. Use a 6-point thin-wall or sleeved socket so you don't mark the alloy wheels.

What is the lug nut torque on a 2017-2022 CR-V?

80 lb-ft (108 Nm), tightened in a star pattern with a torque wrench. Re-check after 50-100 miles of driving.

Do I need to reset the TPMS after rotating tires on a CR-V?

Yes. The 5th-gen CR-V uses indirect TPMS, so after setting pressures go to Settings > Vehicle > TPMS Calibration on the touchscreen or driver information display and select Calibrate, then drive about 30 minutes above roughly 30 mph.

Which rotation pattern should I use on an AWD CR-V?

With standard non-directional tires, use the crossed X pattern on both FWD and AWD CR-Vs: fronts to opposite rear corners, rears straight to the front. If your tires are directional (sidewall rotation arrow), only swap front to rear on the same side.
