On the 5th-gen CR-V, the water pump is not a five-bolt part hanging off the front of the block. All three engines โ the 1.5 L L15B turbo, the 2.4 K24W, and the hybrid's 2.0 LFA โ drive the pump off the timing chain, behind the chain case cover. That turns a "simple" pump job into a front-of-engine teardown: belt off, engine supported, side mount and mount bracket off, crank pulley off with a holder tool, chain cover unsealed and re-sealed with Honda liquid gasket. Plan a full day and buy the mount bolts and a new crank pulley bolt before you start.
The mistake people make is the sealant. The chain cover has no gasket, so the whole job hinges on cleaning both aluminum faces perfectly and laying one correctly sized bead of Hondabond HT or ThreeBond 1207B, then bolting the cover down in sequence within the sealant's working time. Too little leaks; too much squeezes inside and can foul the chain tensioner. The second mistake is the crank pulley bolt โ it is a torque-plus-angle fastener at very high torque, and it needs the proper pulley holder both to remove and to set, not an impact gun and hope.

| Breaker bar 1/2 in drive, 24 in Crack the crank pulley bolt, which is torqued well past 200 ft-lb from the torque-angle procedure. | Required | shop |
| Impact socket 19 mm, 1/2 in drive, 6-point deep Fits the crank pulley bolt head on the L15B, K24W and LFA. | Required | shop |
| Crank pulley holder tool Honda-style pulley holder (Honda 07AAB-001A200 or aftermarket) Holds the crank pulley while you break loose and re-torque the bolt without turning the engine. | Required | shop |
| Serpentine belt tool / long-handle ratchet 14 mm socket on the auto-tensioner arm, 3/8 in drive with 18 in handle Swing the automatic belt tensioner to release the accessory belt (1.5T and 2.4 only). | Required | shop |
| Engine support bar or transmission jack engine support bridge, or jack with wood block Hold the engine while the right-side mount and mount bracket come off for chain cover clearance. | Required | shop |
| Torque wrench 3/8 in drive, 5-80 ft-lb Chain cover, water pump, mount bracket and pulley bolts are all torque-critical in aluminum. | Required | shop |
| Torque wrench, large 1/2 in drive, 50-250 ft-lb Crank pulley bolt initial torque and wheel lug nuts. | Required | shop |
| Torque angle gauge 1/2 in drive The crank pulley bolt is a torque-plus-angle fastener; guessing the angle ruins the pulley. | Required | shop |
| Gasket scraper / plastic razor plastic and brass scrapers Clean old liquid gasket off the aluminum chain cover and block without gouging. | Required | shop |
| Brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol 1 can Degrease the sealing surfaces so the new liquid gasket bonds. | Consumables | shop |
| Honda liquid gasket Hondabond HT or ThreeBond 1207B Seals the timing chain case cover to the block; nothing else is approved here. | Consumables | shop |
| Water pump Engine-specific: L15B 1.5T, K24W 2.4, LFA 2.0 hybrid โ order by VIN The pump and its O-ring/gasket differ by engine, and pumps are not interchangeable. | Parts | shop |
| Honda Type 2 coolant Blue pre-mixed, 1 gallon (hybrid engine loop uses the same Type 2) Refill the engine cooling system; do not mix with green or orange coolant. | Consumables | shop |
| Cam chain tensioner / new pulley bolt engine-specific; tensioner and chain guide advised if high mileage With the cover off it is cheap insurance, and Honda recommends a new crank pulley bolt on torque-angle designs. | Parts | shop |
| Funnel / spill-free coolant filler Honda-compatible radiator neck funnel Fill and burp the system without airlocks โ this engine traps air easily. | Recommended | shop |
| Thread chaser / tap M6 x 1.0 and M8 x 1.25 Clean liquid gasket and corrosion out of the aluminum bolt holes before reassembly. | Recommended | shop |
| Inspection mirror and flashlight LED work light Verify chain timing marks and that no sealant squeezed into the pump impeller area. | Recommended | shop |
| Nitrile gloves and safety glasses Coolant and solvent contact, plus debris when scraping sealant. | Safety | shop |
| HV insulating gloves and service plug access (hybrid only) Class 0 1000 V gloves Required before disturbing anything on the hybrid's orange HV cabling or PCU coolant loop. | Safety | shop |
| Scan tool with Honda coverage bi-directional (Honda HDS or equivalent) Commands the hybrid's electric coolant pump to bleed the PCU loop, and clears any codes set during the job. | Recommended | shop |
1.5T and 2.4 both use a 19 mm crank pulley bolt and a 14 mm auto-tensioner for the accessory belt, but the pumps, chain covers and mount hardware are engine-specific โ order by VIN. The 2.0 hybrid has no accessory belt at all, so no serpentine tool is needed, but it adds a separate PCU/motor coolant loop with a 12 V electric pump that needs a bi-directional scan tool to bleed, plus HV shutdown before you go near the orange cabling. Fastener head sizes on the chain cover are 8, 10 and 12 mm on all three, with bolt lengths differing enough that you must keep them in order.
| Wheel lug nuts | 80 ft-lb (108 Nm) |
| Crank pulley bolt (torque-plus-angle) | verify in the service manual โ initial torque then a specified additional angle; do not guess |
| Timing chain case cover bolts | verify in the service manual (M6 and M8 bolts, tightened in sequence) |
| Water pump mounting bolts | verify in the service manual (typically low-torque M6 in aluminum) |
| Engine side mount / mount bracket bolts | verify in the service manual โ several are single-use torque-angle bolts |
| Radiator drain plug | hand tight only (plastic plug) |
| Accessory belt auto-tensioner bolt | verify in the service manual |
Wheel (19 mm), crank pulley (19 mm), tensioner (14 mm) and the general 8/10/12 mm chain cover hardware are reliable across this generation, but the crank pulley, chain cover, water pump and engine mount torque values vary by engine and must be taken from the Honda service information for your exact VIN.
Yes. On the 1.5T, 2.4 and 2.0 hybrid the pump is driven by the timing chain and sits behind the timing chain case cover. There is no external belt-driven pump on this generation.
No. The cover has to come off, which means removing the accessory belt (1.5T/2.4), supporting the engine, removing the right engine mount and bracket, and pulling the crank pulley with a holder tool.
Honda Type 2 blue pre-mixed coolant only. A radiator drain and refill takes roughly 1 to 1.5 gallons on the engine loop; the hybrid's PCU loop is separate and uses its own reservoir and bleed procedure.
Expect roughly 5-8 hours of labor plus parts, commonly $900-$1,600 depending on region and whether the timing chain tensioner and guides are replaced at the same time. Doing the tensioner while the cover is off is the sensible call on a high-mileage engine.
