Tools you need for battery on a 2017-2022 Honda CR-V

Easy · 20-35 minutes · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 10 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 6-10 in extension, 3/8 in drive
  3. 3/8 in ratchet
  4. Battery terminal brush or wire brush

On the 5th gen CR-V the battery lives on the passenger side of the engine bay under a snap-on plastic cover, and the whole job runs on one socket size: 10 mm. The terminals are easy; the part that trips people up is the hold-down fastener tucked low beside the battery, which you really want a 6-10 inch extension (ideally a wobble) to reach instead of fighting it with a stubby ratchet.

The battery is Group 51R on the 1.5 turbo, the 2.4 K24 and the Hybrid — the "R" matters, because a standard 51 puts the posts on the wrong ends and the cables will not reach. The other thing people get wrong is walking away afterward: Honda does not need battery registration, but the power windows lose their auto-up/down function until you do the hold-the-switch relearn on each door, and the clock and radio presets are gone unless you used a memory saver.

Socket
10 mm 6-point, 3/8 in drive
Fits both battery terminal nuts and the hold-down bracket bolt.
Requiredshop
Extension bar
6 in and 10 in, 3/8 in drive
Reaches the hold-down bracket bolt/J-hook nut down the side of the battery.
Requiredshop
Wobble or swivel extension
3/8 in drive wobble extension
Helps line up on the deep hold-down bolt without removing the intake duct.
Recommendedshop
Combination wrench
10 mm
Backup for terminal nuts if the socket cannot clear the clamp.
Recommendedshop
Battery terminal brush
Post and clamp type
Cleans corrosion off the cable clamps so the new battery makes good contact.
Requiredshop
Battery terminal puller
Small two-jaw clamp puller
Frees a clamp that is stuck to the post without prying on the battery case.
Recommendedshop
Memory saver
OBD-II or 12V socket type
Keeps radio presets, clock and ECU learned values alive during the swap.
Recommendedshop
Battery carry strap
Universal lifting strap
The Group 51R battery sits low with tight clearance; a strap makes lifting easier.
Recommendedshop
Trim tool set
Plastic pry tools
Pops the plastic battery/intake cover clips without breaking them.
Recommendedshop
Shop rags and battery terminal cleaner
Aerosol acid neutralizer
Neutralizes and cleans any acid residue in the battery tray.
Consumablesshop
Terminal protector spray or dielectric grease
Red battery terminal protectant
Applied after tightening to prevent future corrosion.

Differences within the 2017-2022 generation

Tool sizes are identical across the 1.5T, 2.4L and Hybrid — 10 mm for both terminals and the hold-down. The only practical difference is that the 2020-2022 Hybrid (and any CR-V with idle stop) should get an AGM Group 51R rather than a flooded battery, and on the Hybrid you must confirm the READY light is off before disconnecting anything.

Torque specs

Battery terminal clamp nuts (10 mm)Snug only, roughly 4-6 ft-lb (5-8 Nm) — verify in the service manual
Battery hold-down bracket bolt / J-hook nut (10 mm)verify in the service manual (snug so the battery cannot move; do not distort the case)

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, engine off, key out. On the Hybrid, make sure the system is fully shut down and the READY light is off. Note your radio presets.
  2. Open the hood and locate the battery on the passenger side of the engine bay. Remove the plastic battery/intake cover by releasing its clips and lifting it off.
  3. If you are using a memory saver, plug it into the OBD-II port under the dash or the 12V accessory socket now.
  4. Loosen the 10 mm nut on the NEGATIVE (black, marked -) clamp first. Twist the clamp free and tuck the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
  5. Lift the red cover off the POSITIVE terminal, loosen its 10 mm nut and remove that clamp.
  6. Using the 10 mm socket on a 6-10 in extension, remove the hold-down bracket bolt (or the nut on the J-hook rod) at the base/side of the battery, then lift the bracket out. Keep the bolt and bracket together.
  7. Lift the battery straight up and out with a carry strap, keeping it level. Watch the surrounding plastic and the vent tube if fitted.
  8. Wipe out the tray, neutralize any white corrosion with terminal cleaner, and brush the inside of both cable clamps until bright.
  9. Set the new Group 51R battery into the tray with the positive post on the same side as the old one (51R has reversed terminals; a plain 51 will not reach). Transfer the vent tube if one was used.
  10. Refit the hold-down bracket and snug the 10 mm bolt so the battery cannot rock. Do not overtighten into the plastic tray.
  11. Connect the POSITIVE clamp first and snug the 10 mm nut, then the NEGATIVE clamp. Both should not twist on the post by hand. Refit the red terminal cover.
  12. Spray the terminals with protectant, refit the plastic cover, then start the engine (or power up the Hybrid) and let it idle a few minutes.
  13. Reset the clock and radio presets. Relearn each power window's auto-up/down: hold the switch down until the glass is fully open, hold 1 more second, then hold up until fully closed and hold 1 more second. Repeat per door.
  14. If the idle is slightly rough or the transmission shifts oddly for the first few miles, drive it normally; the ECU relearns quickly. Recycle the old battery at the parts store for your core refund.

Watch out

The 10 mm terminal and hold-down fasteners and the Group 51R size are consistent across the 2017-2022 CR-V including the Hybrid; the exact hold-down and terminal torque figures should be confirmed in the Honda service manual, and check your old battery's label before buying if it was ever replaced with a non-OEM size.

Frequently asked

What size battery does a 2017-2022 Honda CR-V take?

Group 51R, typically around 410-500 CCA. The reverse-terminal 51R layout is required so the factory cables reach; a plain Group 51 will not work. Hybrid and idle-stop models should use an AGM 51R.

What socket do I need to change the CR-V battery?

A 10 mm socket handles both battery terminal nuts and the hold-down bracket bolt. Add a 6-10 inch 3/8 in extension, preferably with a wobble, to reach the hold-down down beside the battery.

Do I have to reset or register the battery on a Honda CR-V?

No electronic registration is needed. You will need to reset the clock and radio presets and relearn each power window's auto-up/down by holding the switch fully down then fully up for an extra second each way.

Can I replace the 12V battery on a CR-V Hybrid myself?

Yes — the 12V battery is a normal Group 51R in the engine bay and is replaced the same way. Just confirm the READY light is off before you start and never touch the orange high-voltage cabling or the under-floor traction battery.
