On the 5th-gen CR-V the rear brake job itself is easy: two 12 mm slide-pin bolts, two 17 mm bracket bolts, rotor off. What makes it different from an older Honda is the electric parking brake, which is fitted to every 2017-2022 CR-V including the 2020+ Hybrid. The piston is screwed out by a small motor on the back of the caliper, so no amount of clamping will push it back in.

The fix is a scan tool with Honda EPB maintenance mode, which retracts the actuators before you start and recalibrates them after. Cheap code readers will not do it. The single most common mistake is trying to wind or clamp the piston back without service mode, which strips the actuator gears or sets an EPB fault that then needs a tool anyway. The second most common is skipping the hub face cleanup, which produces a pulsating pedal a few thousand miles later.

Differences within the 2017-2022 generation

Fastener sizes are identical across the 1.5 turbo, 2.4 K24 and the 2020-2022 Hybrid: 12 mm caliper pin bolts, 17 mm bracket bolts, 19 mm lug nuts, and the same solid rear rotor. Only the Hybrid differs in practice, where regenerative braking means lighter pad wear but more rotor corrosion, so rotors often need replacing before the pads do.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the front wheels, and leave the transmission in Park. Do not set the parking brake.
  2. With the ignition on, use the scan tool to put the electric parking brake into maintenance/service mode. The rear actuators will buzz as they retract fully. Confirm the EPB indicator shows the system is in service mode before touching anything.
  3. Loosen the rear lug nuts a quarter turn, jack the rear, set jack stands under the reinforced lift points, and remove both rear wheels.
  4. Remove the two 12 mm caliper guide pin bolts. Hold the slide pin with a 17 mm open-end wrench if it turns with the bolt.
  5. Slide the caliper off the bracket and hang it from a coil spring with a bungee. Never let it dangle on the hose or the EPB motor wiring.
  6. Pull the old pads out of the bracket and remove the stainless abutment clips.
  7. Remove the two 17 mm bracket bolts and take the bracket off.
  8. Remove the rotor. If it is rust-bonded, thread two M8 x 1.25 bolts into the jacking holes and tighten evenly to push it off, or tap the hat with a dead-blow hammer.
  9. Wire-brush the hub face down to bare metal and wipe with brake cleaner. A rusty hub face causes runout and pedal pulsation.
  10. Apply a very thin film of anti-seize to the hub face only (not the wheel-mounting surface or studs), fit the new rotor, and hold it with a lug nut.
  11. Clean and grease the pad abutment surfaces on the bracket, install the new clips, then torque the bracket bolts to spec.
  12. Pull the slide pins, wipe them clean, inspect the rubber boots for tears, and re-lubricate with silicone caliper grease.
  13. Retract the piston. In EPB service mode the piston should already be fully back; if the new pads will not fit, either verify service mode or remove the actuator motor and wind the piston clockwise with a cube tool.
  14. Fit the new pads (wear-indicator pad toward the inside unless the set specifies otherwise), apply a thin film of brake lube to the pad ear contact points, and refit the caliper.
  15. Torque the 12 mm guide pin bolts to spec.
  16. Repeat on the other side, then reinstall the wheels and torque lug nuts to 80 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  17. Use the scan tool to exit EPB maintenance mode and run the calibration/apply-release cycle. Cycle the EPB switch several times and confirm no dash warnings.
  18. Pump the brake pedal until firm before moving the vehicle. Check the brake fluid level; top up only if needed.
  19. Bed the pads: 6-8 moderate stops from about 35 mph to 10 mph with cool-down, avoiding a full stop while hot.
  20. Re-torque lug nuts after 50-100 miles.

Watch out

The 12 mm caliper pin bolt, 17 mm bracket bolt and 19 mm lug nut sizes are standard across all 5th-gen CR-V trims and I am confident in them, and 80 ft-lb lug torque is the Honda spec; confirm the caliper and bracket torque values in a factory service manual for your exact year.

Can I do the rear brakes on a 2017-2022 CR-V without a scan tool?

Not properly. The only tool-free workaround is unbolting the EPB actuator motor from the caliper and winding the piston in with a cube tool, but you still risk a stored fault and lose the ability to recalibrate. A budget scan tool with Honda EPB service mode is the better route.
