On the DT-generation Ram 1500 the front brake job is mechanically simple but physically big. The twin-piston caliper and 14-15 inch rotor are heavy, and the two caliper bracket bolts into the knuckle are torqued high enough that a stubby ratchet will not move them. Budget for a long breaker bar and a torque wrench that actually reads to 150 ft-lb, not a 3/8 in click wrench maxing out at 80.

What varies is the brake package, not the engine. eTorque 5.7, Pentastar and EcoDiesel trucks all use the same basic front caliper design, but rotor diameter and pad shape change with max tow, heavy-duty and Rebel/TRX-adjacent packages, so order by VIN or measure the old rotor. The mistake people make most often is skipping the hub face: leave scale and rust on the hub and the brand new rotor sits crooked, and you get pedal pulsation within a thousand miles and blame the rotor.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Tool sizes do not change between the 3.6 Pentastar eTorque, 5.7 Hemi eTorque and 3.0 EcoDiesel - all use 22 mm lug nuts, 21 mm caliper bracket bolts and 7 mm hex guide pin bolts. What changes is parts, not tools: trucks with the max tow or heavy-duty brake package use a larger front rotor and a different pad shape, so order by VIN. A small number of trucks use hex-head guide pin bolts instead of internal hex, so check before you start.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and leave the parking brake OFF only if you are also servicing rears; for front-only work it can stay on.
  2. Open the hood and siphon out about a third of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir so pushing the pistons back does not overflow it.
  3. Loosen the 22 mm lug nuts a quarter turn while the tire is on the ground.
  4. Lift the front of the truck at the frame rail or the front crossmember and set jack stands under the frame rails. Remove both front wheels.
  5. Inspect the flexible brake hose and the caliper for leaks before disassembly.
  6. Remove the two caliper guide pin bolts (7 mm hex on most DT trucks; a few use a 13-15 mm hex head). If a pin spins, hold its flats with a 15 mm or 18 mm wrench.
  7. Slide the caliper off the rotor and hang it from a coil spring or control arm with a bungee. Never let it dangle on the hose.
  8. Lift the old pads out of the bracket and note how the clips sit.
  9. Remove the two 21 mm caliper bracket bolts from the knuckle. These are tight; use a breaker bar and steady pull. Set the bracket aside.
  10. Pull the rotor straight off. If it is rust-bonded, hit the hat (not the friction surface) with a dead blow hammer, or thread M8 x 1.25 bolts into the jacking holes and tighten evenly to push it off.
  11. Wire brush or disc the hub face until it is bare metal and flat. Any rust left here causes runout and pedal pulsation.
  12. Spray the new rotor both sides with brake cleaner to strip the shipping oil, wipe dry, and install it over the studs. Snug it with one or two lug nuts to hold it flat against the hub.
  13. Clean the caliper bracket abutment areas, fit the new stainless clips, and apply a thin film of caliper grease on the pad contact surfaces of the clips.
  14. Reinstall the bracket with the 21 mm bolts and torque them (approx. 130 ft-lb - verify in the service manual).
  15. Pull each guide pin out, wipe it, and re-grease with silicone caliper lube. Make sure the rubber boots are intact and seated; check both pins slide freely by hand.
  16. Compress both caliper pistons squarely with a twin-piston spreader or a C-clamp against an old pad. Watch the reservoir so it does not overflow.
  17. Fit the new pads (wear indicator tab usually inboard/top - match the old pads), set the caliper over them, and install the guide pin bolts to about 26 ft-lb (verify in the service manual).
  18. Repeat on the other side.
  19. Before lowering the truck, pump the brake pedal until it is firm. Top the reservoir to MAX with fresh DOT 3 fluid.
  20. Refit the wheels, lower the truck, and torque the 22 mm lug nuts to 130 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  21. Bed the brakes: from about 35 mph, do 6-8 moderate stops to 10 mph with cool-down in between, then drive gently without dragging the brakes for a few miles.

Watch out
