Differences within the 2021-2024 generation

Socket sizes are the same across 2.7 EcoBoost, 3.5 EcoBoost, 5.0 V8 and 3.5 PowerBoost โ€” 22 mm lugs, 13 mm guide pins, 21 mm bracket bolts. What changes is rotor size: trucks with the heavy-duty payload package, Max Trailer Tow, Raptor or the heavier PowerBoost hybrid driveline commonly get the larger-diameter, thicker front rotor, so match parts by VIN. Raptor uses its own larger front brake package entirely.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, leave the transmission in Park and the electronic parking brake ON (it only acts on the rear, so it is safe to leave set for a front job).
  2. Break the lug nuts loose about a quarter turn with the 22 mm socket and breaker bar while the tires are still on the ground.
  3. Jack the front of the truck at the frame or factory lift point and set jack stands under the frame rails. Remove both front wheels.
  4. Inspect the flex hose and guide pin boots before you start; replace anything cracked or weeping.
  5. Remove the two 13 mm caliper guide pin bolts from the inboard side of the caliper. If a pin sleeve spins, hold it with an 18 mm wrench.
  6. Slide the caliper off the bracket and hang it from the coil spring with a bungee โ€” never let it dangle on the hose.
  7. Pull the two pads out of the anchor bracket and note how the abutment clips sit.
  8. Remove the two 21 mm anchor bracket bolts and lift the bracket off the knuckle. It is heavy; keep both hands on it.
  9. Pull the rotor off. If it is rust-bound, tap the hat between the studs with a dead blow, or thread two bolts into the rotor's threaded jack holes if fitted.
  10. Wire-brush the hub face clean and flat, then wipe with brake cleaner. Scale here causes runout and pedal pulsation.
  11. Clean the anchor bracket abutment surfaces, install the new abutment clips, and apply a thin film of caliper grease to the clips and pad ear contact points.
  12. Fit the new rotor (thin film of anti-seize on the hub face only, none near the studs or friction surface) and spray both faces with brake cleaner to strip the shipping oil.
  13. Reinstall the anchor bracket and torque the two bolts to spec in an alternating pattern.
  14. Push the caliper piston fully back with the C-clamp or spreader, using an old pad as a pressure plate. Crack the bleeder if the fluid level is at max, or pull a little fluid from the reservoir.
  15. Insert the new pads, clean and grease the guide pin bores/bushings, refit the caliper and torque the guide pin bolts to spec.
  16. Repeat on the other side, then refit the wheels and torque the lug nuts to 150 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  17. Lower the truck, and with the engine off pump the brake pedal until it is firm. Top off the reservoir with DOT 4 LV as required.
  18. Bed the pads: from about 35 mph, do 6-8 moderate stops down to 5-10 mph without coming to a full stop, then drive several minutes without using the brakes to cool them.
