Front brakes on the XA50 RAV4 are about as friendly as modern brake jobs get. One piston per caliper, two 14 mm slide-pin bolts to free the caliper, two 17 mm bolts to drop the bracket, and the rotor slides off. No screws holding the rotor, no electric front calipers, and the same layout on the 2.5 gas car, the hybrid and the Prime.
What varies is rotor size โ Prime and some higher trims run a bigger front disc โ so measure before you order. The mistake people make is skipping the hub face: RAV4 hubs collect a ring of rust under the old rotor, and a new rotor bolted over that scale gives you a pulsing pedal within a few hundred miles. Clean it to bare metal. The other one is on hybrids: leave the car completely off and do not touch the pedal while a caliper is open, because the brake actuator can pressurize the system.
| Item | Type | |
|---|---|---|
| Breaker bar or 1/2 in ratchet 1/2 in drive, 18-24 in Loosen the 21 mm lug nuts before lifting and crack the 17 mm bracket bolts. | Required | shop |
| Lug nut socket 21 mm, 1/2 in drive (thin-wall/protective sleeve for alloys) All XA50 RAV4 wheel nuts are 21 mm. | Required | shop |
| Floor jack 2 ton minimum Lift the front of the vehicle at the pinch-weld jack points. | Required | shop |
| Jack stands 2 ton pair Support the car on the frame rails/pinch welds while wheels are off. | Safety | shop |
| Wheel chocks Chock the rear wheels; the electric parking brake works on the rear only. | Safety | shop |
| Socket 14 mm 6-point, 3/8 in drive Removes the two caliper slide-pin (guide pin) bolts. | Required | shop |
| Socket 17 mm 6-point, 1/2 in drive Removes the two caliper mounting bracket bolts from the steering knuckle. | Required | shop |
| Ratchet 3/8 in drive General fastener work on the caliper and bracket. | Required | shop |
| Open-end wrench 14 mm (and 17 mm) Holds the slide pin if it turns with the bolt, and useful in tight spots. | Recommended | shop |
| Bungee cord or wire hook Hang the caliper from the strut spring so the flex hose is not strained. | Required | shop |
| C-clamp or piston compressor 4 in C-clamp or brake piston spreader Pushes the single caliper piston back into the bore for the new thicker pads. | Required | shop |
| Bolts for rotor jack-off holes M8 x 1.25, 40-50 mm long, two Threaded into the rotor face holes they walk a rust-seized rotor off the hub without hammering. | Recommended | shop |
| Dead blow or 3 lb hammer Shock a stuck rotor loose from the hub flange. | Recommended | shop |
| Wire brush and wheel hub cleaning tool Hub abrasive disc or 90 degree brush Clean rust off the hub face so the new rotor sits flat and does not run out. | Required | shop |
| Torque wrench 1/2 in drive, 25-150 ft-lb Torque bracket bolts and lug nuts to spec. | Required | shop |
| Torque wrench 3/8 in drive, 10-80 ft-lb Accurate torque on the 14 mm slide-pin bolts. | Recommended | shop |
| Brake cleaner Non-chlorinated, 2 cans Wash the protective oil off new rotors and clean caliper hardware. | Consumables | shop |
| Brake caliper grease Silicone/synthetic, high temp Lubricate slide pins, abutment clips and the back of the pad ears. | Consumables | shop |
| Anti-squeal shim grease / brake quiet Toyota disc brake grease or equivalent Applied between pad shims to stop squeal on these calipers. | Consumables | shop |
| Front brake pad set Ceramic or OE-spec, with shims and clips Replacement friction; most XA50 pad kits include new abutment clips. | Parts | shop |
| Front brake rotors Pair; 305 mm x 28 mm typical for 2.5 and hybrid (verify by measuring) New discs; RAV4 Prime and some trims use a larger rotor. | Parts | shop |
| Brake fluid DOT 3 Top off after piston retraction if you open the bleeder or the level drops. | Consumables | shop |
| Bleeder wrench 10 mm flare-nut If you choose to open the bleeder while compressing the piston instead of pushing fluid back. | Recommended | shop |
| Wire brush and small file Clean the bracket abutment surfaces where the pads slide. | Recommended | shop |
| Nitrile gloves and safety glasses Brake dust and cleaner spray. | Safety | shop |
| Penetrating oil Helps on seized slide pins and rusted rotor-to-hub joints in salt states. | Consumables | shop |
Fastener sizes are identical across the 2.5 A25A-FKS, the hybrid and RAV4 Prime: 21 mm lug nuts, 14 mm caliper slide-pin bolts, 17 mm caliper bracket bolts. Only the rotor and pad part numbers change โ most 2.5 and hybrid models use a roughly 305 mm x 28 mm vented front rotor, while RAV4 Prime uses a larger front disc, so measure the old rotor's diameter and thickness before buying.
| Wheel nuts | 76 ft-lb (103 Nm) |
| Caliper slide-pin bolts (14 mm head) | 25 ft-lb (34 Nm) โ verify in the service manual |
| Caliper mounting bracket to knuckle (17 mm head) | 78-80 ft-lb (107 Nm) โ verify in the service manual |
| Brake hose banjo bolt (only if hose removed) | verify in the service manual |
| Bleeder screw | verify in the service manual |
The 21 mm lug, 14 mm slide-pin and 17 mm bracket bolt sizes and the 76 ft-lb lug torque are solid across the XA50 generation; the caliper bolt torque values should be confirmed against the Toyota service manual for your exact model year and trim, and rotor size should be measured on your own car.
The two caliper slide-pin bolts take a 14 mm socket, and the two caliper mounting bracket bolts that hold the bracket to the steering knuckle take a 17 mm socket. Wheel nuts are 21 mm.
76 ft-lb (103 Nm), tightened in a star pattern with the vehicle on the ground. Re-check after about 50 miles, especially on steel wheels or aftermarket alloys.
Mechanically the front calipers, brackets and bolt sizes are the same. The difference is the electronically controlled brake system: keep the vehicle powered off, do not press the pedal with a caliper open, and expect low pad wear but more rust because regen does much of the braking.
The rotor hat has two M8 x 1.25 threaded holes. Thread in two bolts about 50 mm long and tighten them alternately to jack the rotor off the hub. If that fails, soak the hub joint with penetrating oil and strike the rotor hat between the studs with a dead blow hammer.
