Tools you need for battery on a 2020-2024 Toyota Corolla

Easy · 20-40 minutes · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 10 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 6-10 in extension, 3/8 in drive
  3. 3/8 in ratchet
  4. Battery terminal brush
  5. Memory saver (OBD-II or 12V)

The E210 Corolla is one of the easiest modern cars to change a battery on. It sits right at the front left of the engine bay, nothing has to come off to reach it, and every fastener you touch — both terminal nuts and the hold-down clamp bolt — is 10 mm. The only awkward part is that the hold-down J-bolt nut is tucked down between the battery and the fender, so you need a 6-10 inch extension, ideally with a wobble, rather than a stubby ratchet.

Toyota does not require battery registration or coding on these cars, so a plain swap works. What people get wrong is the hybrid: its auxiliary battery is a small vented AGM with a hose on the side, and if you fit a standard sealed battery or forget to transfer the vent tube, you are venting acid mist and hydrogen under the hood. The other common mistake is dropping the J-bolt hook into the subframe when the clamp comes loose — hold it as you pull the bolt out.

Differences within the 2020-2024 generation

Fastener sizes are identical across 1.8 2ZR-FAE, 2.0 M20A-FKS and hybrid: 10 mm terminals and 10 mm hold-down. The battery itself differs — gas cars take a conventional Group 35 (LN2-size tray, roughly 550-650 CCA), while the hybrid takes a much smaller vented AGM in the S46B24R / Group 51R family with the positive post on the right and a vent hose fitting. Always compare post orientation to the old battery, as hybrid and gas cables are not interchangeable in length.

Torque specs

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, engine off, key/smart key out of the car and at least a couple of metres away so the vehicle does not wake up. For the hybrid, make sure the READY light is off.
  2. Open the hood and locate the battery in the front left (driver's side on LHD) corner of the engine bay. Lift off the plastic terminal cover on the positive post.
  3. If you want to keep radio, clock and learned settings, plug in a memory saver at the OBD-II port under the dash before disconnecting anything.
  4. Loosen the negative (-) terminal nut with a 10 mm socket or wrench, work the clamp off the post and tuck it aside where it cannot spring back onto the post.
  5. Loosen the positive (+) terminal nut, remove that clamp and lay the cable out of the way. Never let a tool bridge the positive post and body.
  6. Using a 10 mm socket on a 6-10 in extension, undo the hold-down clamp bolt down the side of the battery against the fender. Retrieve the J-bolt hook from the bottom of the tray so it does not fall into the subframe, and remove the clamp bar.
  7. On the hybrid, pull the vent hose off the side of the battery.
  8. Lift the battery straight up and out, keeping it level. A carry strap helps; the hybrid battery is light, the Group 35 is around 18-20 kg.
  9. Clean the tray and clamp bar with baking soda solution or battery cleaner, rinse lightly, dry, and wire-brush the inside of both cable clamps until bright.
  10. Set the new battery in the tray with the posts on the same side as the old one — positive toward the front/right as it came out. Check the cables reach without stretching before you clamp it down.
  11. Refit the hold-down bar, hook the J-bolt into the tray slot and tighten the 10 mm bolt until the battery cannot rock. Do not crank on it; the plastic case will distort.
  12. On the hybrid, push the vent hose fully onto the new battery's vent port and confirm the opposite vent hole has its plug fitted.
  13. Connect the positive (+) clamp first, tighten to about 48 in-lb (5.4 Nm), then the negative (-) clamp to the same figure. Twist-test each clamp by hand — it should not move at all.
  14. Spray both terminals with anti-corrosion protector and snap the red positive cover back on. Remove the memory saver.
  15. Close the hood, start the car (or press POWER on the hybrid), and check: no warning lights, clock and radio, and charging voltage of roughly 13.5-14.5 V at the posts on a gas car.
  16. Reset power window auto up/down if needed: hold the switch down until fully open, hold 1 more second, then hold up until fully closed and hold 1 more second. Reset the clock, trip settings and any TPMS or drive-mode preferences as needed.

Watch out

The 10 mm fastener sizes and the front-left battery location are consistent across the whole E210 generation and the 48 in-lb terminal spec matches Toyota's usual figure, but battery group size can vary by market and trim, so match the group size and post orientation to the battery you remove or check your owner's manual.

Frequently asked

What size battery does a 2020-2024 Toyota Corolla take?

Non-hybrid 1.8 and 2.0 models use a Group 35 (LN2 tray) battery, typically 550-650 CCA. The Corolla Hybrid uses a small vented AGM in the S46B24R / Group 51R family — check the label on your existing battery before buying.

Do I need to register or code a new battery on a Corolla?

No. Toyota does not use battery management registration on the E210, so a straight swap is all that is required. You will just need to reset the clock, radio presets and possibly the power window auto function.

Where is the 12V battery on the Corolla Hybrid?

Unlike older Prius models, the E210 Corolla Hybrid's 12V auxiliary battery is in the engine bay, front left corner, same spot as the gas cars. It is a small vented AGM with a hose on the side that must be transferred to the new battery.

What socket do I need for the Corolla battery hold-down?

A 10 mm socket on a 6-10 inch 3/8 in extension. The hold-down bolt threads into a J-bolt that hooks into the bottom of the tray, down the fender side of the battery, so a short ratchet alone will not reach it comfortably.
