On the DT-generation Ram 1500 the 12V battery lives in the front passenger corner of the engine bay under a snap-on plastic cover, so it's one of the easier batteries on a modern full-size truck. Two 10 mm terminal nuts, one 13 mm hold-down bolt buried low beside the tray, and it lifts straight out. The only real awkwardness is reaching that hold-down bolt, which is why a 6 in or 10 in extension and a wobble adapter turn a frustrating job into a two-minute one.

What varies is the battery itself. Most DT trucks - 3.6 eTorque, 5.7 eTorque and 3.0 EcoDiesel - use a group H7/94R AGM, and some configurations add a second auxiliary 12V battery in the same area, so open the cover and look before you buy. The thing people get wrong is levering the negative clamp off with a screwdriver and damaging the intelligent battery sensor bolted to that cable; the second mistake is fitting a cheap flooded battery to a start-stop truck and wondering why it dies in 18 months.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

The fasteners are the same across all DT engines: 10 mm terminal nuts and a 13 mm hold-down bolt. Access is tightest on the 3.0 EcoDiesel, where the intake ducting crowds the tray and a wobble extension really helps. eTorque 3.6 and 5.7 trucks add a 48V lithium pack and orange high-voltage cabling that you do not touch for a 12V battery swap, and all start-stop/eTorque trucks require an AGM battery rather than flooded.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, engine off, key fob out of range, hood open. Note radio presets and clock settings if you're not using a memory saver.
  2. Plug the memory saver into the OBD-II port under the driver's side of the dash and confirm it is powered before disconnecting anything.
  3. Locate the battery at the front of the passenger-side engine bay. Unclip and lift off the black plastic battery cover (plastic trim tool for the clips). Look for a second, smaller auxiliary battery in the same area on some configurations.
  4. With a 10 mm socket, loosen the NEGATIVE clamp nut first and lift the clamp off the post. The negative cable has the intelligent battery sensor bolted to it - support the sensor, do not twist, pry or hang the cable by it, and do not disconnect the small sensor connector unless the new battery needs it moved.
  5. Tuck the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post. Then loosen the POSITIVE clamp nut with the 10 mm socket and lift the clamp clear. If a fuse/distribution block is bolted to the positive terminal, keep it supported.
  6. Using the 13 mm socket with a 6 in or 10 in extension (and wobble if needed), remove the hold-down clamp bolt at the base of the tray on the fender side. Keep the bolt and clamp.
  7. Fit a carry strap and lift the battery straight up and out. Keep it upright; an H7 AGM is around 50-55 lb, so use both hands and lift with your legs, not over the fender.
  8. Clean the tray: vacuum out debris, neutralize any corrosion with terminal cleaner or baking soda solution, dry it, and inspect the tray and hold-down for rust or cracks.
  9. Wire-brush the inside of both cable clamps and check the cable ends for green corrosion under the insulation. Replace a cable end that crumbles.
  10. Compare the new battery to the old one: same group size (H7/94R on most DT trucks), same terminal layout, and AGM if the original was AGM. Check resting voltage - it should be about 12.6V.
  11. Lower the new battery into the tray squarely, refit the hold-down clamp and 13 mm bolt, and tighten it so the battery cannot rock. Do not crush the case.
  12. Connect the POSITIVE clamp first, tighten the 10 mm nut snug (no more), then connect the NEGATIVE clamp and tighten. Reposition the IBS sensor exactly as it came off and reconnect its plug if it was disturbed.
  13. Spray both terminals with battery terminal protector, refit the plastic cover, and remove the memory saver.
  14. Start the engine. Expect the auto start-stop feature to stay disabled for a while - the PCM has to relearn the new battery's state of charge over a few drive cycles. Scan for and clear any stored charging/battery codes, and where your tool supports it, reset the battery-aging data.
  15. Reset the clock, radio presets and any windows/sunroof one-touch functions that lost their learned positions.

Watch out

The 10 mm terminal nuts, 13 mm hold-down bolt and passenger-side under-hood location are consistent across 2019-2024 DT Ram 1500s, but battery group size and the presence of an auxiliary battery vary by trim and package - verify against the label on your existing battery and confirm torque values in the FCA/Stellantis service manual.
