On the 14th-gen F-150 the 12V battery lives in the front passenger corner of the engine bay. The job itself is simple โ two 8 mm terminal nuts and one hold-down bolt โ but that hold-down bolt is a J-hook down at the base of the battery, so you need a long 1/4 in extension to reach it rather than a stubby ratchet. The battery is also a heavy AGM with no handle, so a carrier strap saves your knuckles and the fender paint.
The thing people get wrong is treating it like an old truck battery. Every 2021+ F-150 has auto start-stop and a Battery Monitoring Sensor on the negative cable, so you must fit an AGM of the same group size and reset the BMS afterward with FORScan or a Ford-capable scan tool. Skip that and the PCM keeps charging as if the battery were worn out, start-stop stays off, and the new battery ages early. Also leave the BMS clamp on the cable alone โ it is not a terminal.
| Item | Type | |
|---|---|---|
| Safety glasses Battery acid and sparks at the terminals. | Safety | shop |
| Nitrile gloves Keeps acid residue and lead off your hands. | Safety | shop |
| Memory saver OBD2 port type, 12V feed Keeps radio presets, clock and module settings alive while the battery is out. | Recommended | shop |
| Ratchet 1/4 in drive, 72-tooth preferred Drives the terminal and hold-down fasteners in a tight corner. | Required | shop |
| Socket 8 mm 6-point, 1/4 in drive Loosens both battery terminal clamp nuts and, on most trucks, the hold-down bolt. | Required | shop |
| Socket 10 mm and 13 mm 6-point, 1/4 in drive Some build dates use a 10 mm or 13 mm hold-down bolt head instead of 8 mm. | Recommended | shop |
| Socket extension 1/4 in drive, 8-12 in long The hold-down J-bolt sits low at the base of the battery and cannot be reached by hand. | Required | shop |
| Wobble or swivel extension 1/4 in drive, 3-6 in Helps get a straight pull on the hold-down bolt past the battery tray lip. | Recommended | shop |
| Battery carrier strap Universal clamp-on handle or strap An AGM group 94R weighs about 50 lb and has no handle; the fender lip makes it awkward. | Required | shop |
| Terminal / post cleaning brush Top-post wire brush Cleans corrosion off the cable clamps for a solid connection. | Recommended | shop |
| Battery terminal cleaner spray Acid-neutralizing aerosol Neutralizes and washes off white corrosion on the tray and clamps. | Consumables | shop |
| Terminal protectant Red/blue felt washers or protective spray Slows future corrosion after the clamps are tightened. | Consumables | shop |
| Torque wrench 1/4 in drive, inch-pound range Terminal and hold-down fasteners are low-torque; overtightening cracks the posts or strips the tray. | Recommended | shop |
| Scan tool with Ford BMS reset FORScan with OBDLink EX/MX+, or equivalent Resets the Battery Monitoring Sensor learned state so start-stop and smart charging work correctly. | Recommended | shop |
| Shop towels and baking soda Cleans and neutralizes any acid spill in the tray. | Consumables | shop |
| Replacement battery AGM group 94R/H7 (most trucks); some 2.7L builds use group 48/H6 โ match the label Start-stop and the BMS require an AGM of the same group and CCA rating. | Parts | shop |
| Trim panel pry tool Plastic Pops the plastic engine-bay cowl/air deflector clips if they block access on some trims. | Recommended | shop |
Fastener sizes are the same across 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L V8 and 3.5L PowerBoost: 8 mm terminal nuts, with the hold-down bolt 8 mm on most builds and 10 mm or 13 mm on some. Battery group size is what changes โ most trucks take an AGM group 94R (H7), while some base 2.7L builds use group 48 (H6); PowerBoost always uses AGM. Always match the group and CCA printed on the old battery label.
| Battery terminal clamp nuts (8 mm) | approx 71 lb-in / 8 Nm โ verify in the service manual |
| Battery hold-down bolt | approx 89 lb-in / 10 Nm โ verify in the service manual |
The 8 mm terminal nuts and long-extension hold-down bolt are correct for this generation, but hold-down bolt heads have appeared in 8, 10 and 13 mm depending on build date, so carry all three; torque figures listed as approximate should be confirmed in the Ford workshop manual.
In the engine compartment at the front passenger-side corner, sometimes under a plastic cover or air deflector. On PowerBoost hybrids the 12V battery is in the same place; the high-voltage battery is a separate unit under the truck.
An 8 mm socket handles both terminal clamp nuts. The hold-down bolt is usually 8 mm as well but has been seen in 10 mm and 13 mm, and you need an 8-12 in 1/4 in drive extension to reach it.
Yes โ run a Battery Monitoring Sensor (BMS) reset with FORScan or a Ford IDS/FDRS-capable tool so the charging strategy treats the battery as new. You will also need to reset the clock and radio presets and relearn one-touch window operation.
Not recommended. All 14th-gen F-150s have auto start-stop and a smart charging strategy tuned for AGM; a flooded battery will fail early and can leave start-stop disabled or set charging faults.
