On the E210 Corolla the rear brakes are about as easy as modern disc brakes get: two 14 mm bolts release the caliper, two 17 mm bolts release the bracket, and the rotor slides off once the rust bond is broken. The only real decision point is the piston. Rear calipers with the cable parking brake lever bolted to them have a screw-in piston that has to be rotated clockwise as it is pushed back, so a wind-back tool is not optional.

First check what your car actually has. Lower 1.8 sedan trims left the factory with rear drums, while SE, XSE, hatchbacks and most hybrids got rear discs, and rotor diameter is not the same across all of them - order by VIN or measure before you buy. The mistake people make most often is forcing the piston in with a C-clamp and wrecking the internal parking brake adjuster, followed closely by forgetting to cycle the parking brake a few times afterwards so the mechanism re-adjusts.

Differences within the 2020-2024 generation

Fastener sizes are the same whether you have the 1.8 2ZR-FAE, the 2.0 M20A-FKS or the hybrid: 21 mm lugs, 14 mm caliper bolts, 17 mm bracket bolts. What changes with trim, not engine, is the rear brake type (drums on base 1.8 sedans, discs on SE/XSE/hatch/hybrid) and rear rotor diameter, so pads and rotors must be matched by VIN. Hybrids use regenerative braking heavily, so their rear pads and rotors often last far longer but are more prone to surface rust.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the front wheels, and release the parking brake fully so the rear caliper levers are slack. Leave the transmission in Park (or gear) for now.
  2. Crack the 21 mm lug nuts loose about a quarter turn while the wheel is still on the ground.
  3. Jack the rear at the factory lift point and set jack stands under the pinch welds. Remove the wheel.
  4. Open the brake fluid reservoir cap and check the level. If it is at or above the full line, draw a little out with a syringe so pushing the pistons back does not overflow it.
  5. Look at the caliper: if a parking brake cable and lever are attached to it, the piston screws in. If the rear parking brake is a drum-in-hat or the caliper has no cable, the piston pushes straight in.
  6. Remove the two 14 mm guide pin bolts from the back of the caliper. Hold the pin with a 14 mm wrench if it turns with the bolt.
  7. Lift the caliper off and hang it from the coil spring or trailing arm with a bungee cord. Never let it dangle on the flexible hose.
  8. Slide the old pads and their shims/clips out of the bracket. Note how the wear indicator and shims are oriented.
  9. Remove the two 17 mm bracket bolts and take the bracket off.
  10. Pull the rotor. If it is rust-welded, thread M8 x 1.25 bolts into the two holes in the rotor face and tighten them evenly, or tap the rotor between the studs with a dead blow hammer.
  11. Wire brush the hub face clean and remove any rust ridge. Wipe a very thin film of anti-seize on the hub face only.
  12. Fit the new rotor and snug it with a lug nut or two to hold it flat while you work.
  13. Clean the bracket abutments, install new anti-rattle clips, and grease the pad ear contact points and the guide pin bores lightly.
  14. Reinstall the bracket and torque the 17 mm bolts to spec. Fit the new pads with the wear indicator in the factory position.
  15. Screw the caliper piston in clockwise with the wind-back tool until it is flush and the tool's pins are engaged in the piston slots. If it is a push-type piston, compress it slowly with a C-clamp against an old pad.
  16. Slide the caliper over the new pads, reinstall the 14 mm guide pin bolts and torque them. The caliper should slide freely by hand.
  17. Repeat on the other side. Never do only one rear corner.
  18. Refit the wheel, lower the car, and torque the lugs to 76 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  19. With the engine off, pump the brake pedal until it is firm. If the pedal stays soft, pump again - pistons that were wound back take several strokes.
  20. Set and release the parking brake three or four times to self-adjust the cable mechanism, then check that the lever holds the car on a slope. Top off brake fluid and refit the cap.
  21. Bed the brakes in: from about 35 mph, apply moderate braking down to 10 mph six to eight times without coming to a full stop, then drive gently for a few minutes to cool them. Re-check lug torque after 50 miles.

If the parking brake cable attaches directly to a lever on the caliper, the piston screws in clockwise and you need a wind-back tool. If the parking brake acts on a separate mechanism and the caliper has no cable, the piston pushes straight in with a C-clamp. Check before you apply any force.
