Tools you need for battery on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4

Must-have tools
10 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
12 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
6-10 in extension, 3/8 in drive
Ratchet, 3/8 in drive
Battery terminal brush
Toyota put the 12V battery under the hood on the driver's side for the whole XA50 generation, including the hybrid - if you have owned an older RAV4 Hybrid with the battery in the rear cargo area, that is no longer the case. Access is good, and the whole job is two 10 mm terminal nuts and one hold-down nut that sits at the bottom of a long J-hook rod, so a 6-10 inch extension makes it far easier than a stubby ratchet.
The thing people get wrong is the battery type on hybrids: they take an AGM battery with a side vent tube, and dropping in a cheap flooded Group 24F causes short battery life and acid fumes in the engine bay. The other common miss is forgetting that the power window auto-up function stops working after a disconnect until you reinitialize each window switch, which takes about 30 seconds per door.

Ratchet 3/8 in drive Drives terminal and hold-down fasteners.
Socket set 10 mm and 12 mm, 6-point, 3/8 in drive 10 mm for battery terminal clamp nuts, 12 mm for the hold-down bracket nut (some units are 10 mm - check yours).
Memory saver / OBD power supply OBD-II 9V or 12V feed Keeps radio presets, clock and learned settings so the car does not relearn idle and window auto-up.
Replacement 12V battery Gas: Group 24F. Hybrid: AGM, Toyota-spec AGM (LN2/H5-size) - match the label on the old one The actual battery; hybrids must get AGM, not flooded.
Fastener sizes are the same on the 2.5L A25A-FKS gas and the hybrid: 10 mm terminal nuts, 10 or 12 mm hold-down nut. The battery itself differs - gas models use a standard flooded Group 24F, while hybrids use a smaller Toyota-spec AGM battery with a vent tube, so check the old battery's label before buying.
Torque specs
Battery terminal clamp nuts (10 mm)
about 4-5 Nm (35-45 in-lb) - snug, do not overtighten; verify in the service manual
Battery hold-down clamp nut
verify in the service manual (snug only - the J-hook rod will bend if overtightened)
How the job goes
Park on level ground, turn the ignition fully off (hybrid: press POWER off and make sure READY is out), remove the key/fob from the cabin, and let it sit a couple of minutes.
Open the hood and locate the battery at the front driver's side corner of the engine bay. Remove the plastic cover/lid if fitted (it lifts off or unclips).
If you are using a memory saver, plug it into the OBD-II port under the driver's side dash now.
Loosen the negative (-) terminal nut with a 10 mm socket or wrench and lift the clamp off the post. Tuck the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post. Note the battery current sensor built into the negative cable - handle it gently and do not pull on its wiring.
Fold back the red cover on the positive (+) terminal, loosen the 10 mm nut and remove that clamp.
Using a 12 mm (some are 10 mm) socket on a long extension, undo the hold-down clamp nut at the front or side of the battery. Lift out the clamp and hook rod and keep the hardware together.
On a hybrid, pull the vent tube off the side of the battery. Do not lose it - the new AGM battery must be vented the same way.
Lift the battery straight out with a carry strap, keeping it upright.
Clean the tray, hold-down and cable clamps with the terminal brush and a baking soda solution, then dry everything.
Set the new battery in with the posts on the same side as the original. Confirm the polarity matches before anything touches a post.
Refit the vent tube on hybrids and plug or cap the unused vent port on the opposite side if the battery came with a plug.
Reinstall the hold-down rod and clamp and snug the nut - the battery must not move by hand, but do not crush the case.
Connect the positive (+) clamp first and tighten the 10 mm nut, then the negative (-) clamp. Refit the red positive cover.
Spray or grease the terminals, refit the battery cover, and remove the memory saver.
Turn the ignition on and check: clock, radio presets, tire pressure warning, and the power window auto-up/down function. Reinitialize window auto-up by holding the switch fully down until the glass stops, holding 1 more second, then holding fully up past close and holding 1 more second, per door.
Start the engine (or power up the hybrid) and let it idle 5-10 minutes to relearn idle, then verify charging voltage of roughly 13.5-14.5 V at the battery with the multimeter. Recycle the old battery at the parts store.
Watch out
Always disconnect negative first and reconnect it last - a wrench bridging the positive post to the body will arc violently.
Hybrids must use an AGM battery. A flooded battery will not survive the hybrid charging profile and the vent tube setup, and it can vent acid into the engine bay.
Do not pry or hammer stuck clamps off the posts - spread the clamp with a proper spreader. Cracking the post ruins a new battery.
The negative cable carries a battery current sensor on many XA50 RAV4s. Do not yank, twist or unplug it; if you disturb its connector, reseat it fully.
After disconnection the engine may idle roughly for a few minutes and the power windows lose auto-up until reinitialized. Steering angle/tire pressure warnings may need a short drive to clear.
Keep tools away from the orange high-voltage cabling on hybrids. The 12V battery work itself does not touch the HV system, but do not use the HV components as a ground.
The 10 mm terminal nuts and engine-bay driver's-side location are consistent across the XA50 generation; the hold-down nut is most often 12 mm but some units are 10 mm, so take both sockets, and confirm your exact group size and AGM requirement from the label on the old battery.
Frequently asked
Where is the 12V battery on a 2019-2024 RAV4 Hybrid?
Under the hood, front driver's side corner of the engine bay, same as the gas model. Unlike the previous generation RAV4 Hybrid, it is not in the rear cargo area.
What socket sizes do I need?
10 mm for both battery terminal clamp nuts, and 10 or 12 mm for the hold-down clamp nut depending on the unit. Bring a 6-10 inch 3/8 in extension to reach the hold-down nut down the J-hook rod.
Does the RAV4 need battery registration or a scan tool after replacement?
No. Toyota does not require battery registration or coding like BMW and some VW/Audi models. The car may idle slightly rough for a few minutes and you will need to reinitialize the power window auto-up function.
Can I use a regular flooded battery in the RAV4 Hybrid?
No - the hybrid is designed around an AGM battery with a vent tube routed out of the engine bay. Use an AGM of the correct size; a flooded replacement will have a short life and can vent corrosive gas under the hood.
