On the E210 Corolla this is a wheel-off, fender-liner-off job rather than an engine-out job, which makes it very doable in a driveway. The 1.8 L 2ZR-FAE and 2.0 L M20A-FKS both run a mechanical pump driven by the single serpentine belt, so you drain the coolant, pull the belt with a tensioner tool, unbolt the pulley and the pump, and reverse. Almost all the fasteners you touch are 10 mm, with 12 and 14 mm for brackets and the tensioner.
The Hybrid is a different animal: its 2ZR-FXE uses an electric water pump that bolts on with three fasteners and an electrical plug, no belt involved, but a fault usually sets a code and you want a scanner to verify the new pump is being commanded. The thing people get wrong on every version is the refill. These systems trap air, and a Corolla that overheats a week after a water pump replacement is nearly always a bleeding problem, not a bad pump. Use a spill-free funnel, run it to full temperature with the heater on high, and recheck cold for the next two or three days.

| Ratchet and extensions 3/8 in drive, 3 in and 6 in extensions plus wobble/swivel The pump bolts sit behind the belt in a tight pocket against the frame rail. | Required | shop |
| Serpentine belt tool Long-handle belt tensioner wrench, 3/8 in square drive or 14 mm Releases the automatic tensioner so the belt can come off (non-hybrid only). | Required | shop |
| Combination wrench set 10, 12, 14 mm For bolts where a socket won't clear the frame rail or hose clamps. | Recommended | shop |
| Hose clamp pliers Spring clamp pliers, cable type preferred Toyota uses spring band clamps on the heater and bypass hoses near the pump. | Recommended | shop |
| Gasket scraper Plastic or brass scraper Clean the aluminum pump mating surface without gouging it. | Required | shop |
| Torque wrench 3/8 in drive, 5-60 Nm range Pump and cover bolts thread into aluminum and are easy to strip. | Required | shop |
| Scan tool Toyota Techstream or bidirectional OBD2 scanner Required on Hybrid to clear electric pump codes and command the pump for bleeding. | Recommended | shop |
| Coolant funnel kit Spill-free funnel with Toyota/universal adapter Burps air out of the system during fill — critical on the hybrid. | Recommended | shop |
| Water pump OEM Aisin/Toyota for 2ZR-FAE or M20A-FKS; electric pump 161A0-series for hybrid The replacement unit, supplied with its O-ring or gasket. | Parts | shop |
| Serpentine belt Engine-specific; replace while it is off Cheap insurance since the belt must come off anyway (non-hybrid). | Parts | shop |

| Nitrile gloves and safety glasses Coolant is hot, toxic to animals and irritating to skin and eyes. | Safety | shop |
1.8 L 2ZR-FAE and 2.0 L M20A-FKS use a belt-driven mechanical pump — you need the serpentine belt tensioner tool and will remove a pulley with four 10 mm bolts. The Hybrid's 2ZR-FXE uses an electric pump: no belt work, three 10 mm bolts and a connector, but Techstream or a bidirectional scanner is strongly recommended to clear codes and verify operation. Bracket and accessory bolt sizes run 12-14 mm on the M20A versus mostly 12 mm on the 2ZR.
| Wheel lug nuts | 76 ft-lb (103 Nm) |
| Water pump mounting bolts (M6, 2ZR-FAE / M20A-FKS) | verify in the service manual |
| Electric water pump bolts (hybrid 2ZR-FXE) | verify in the service manual |
| Serpentine belt tensioner / idler pulley bolt | verify in the service manual |
| Radiator drain cock | Hand tight only — plastic |
| Engine block coolant drain plug (if opened) | verify in the service manual |
Fastener head sizes (10 mm pump and shield bolts, 12/14 mm brackets and tensioner, 21 mm lugs) and the 76 ft-lb lug torque are reliable for the E210 platform, but specific water pump bolt torque values vary by engine, so confirm them and the exact coolant capacity in the Toyota service manual for your engine code before final tightening.
On the 2020-2024 1.8 L 2ZR-FAE and 2.0 L M20A-FKS it is driven by the external serpentine accessory belt, not the timing chain, so you do not need to touch valve timing. The Hybrid uses an electrically driven pump with no mechanical drive at all.
Roughly 6-7 quarts (about 6 liters) total for the gas engines, though a radiator-only drain recovers about 4-5 quarts. Use Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, pre-diluted) and confirm the exact capacity for your engine in the manual.
Pink coolant crust or drips near the right front of the engine, a weep hole leak behind the pulley, a whining or growling bearing noise that changes with engine speed, and coolant level dropping with no visible hose leak. On hybrids, a failed electric pump usually triggers an overheat warning and a P261x-series code.
It is smart to do it while the system is already drained, since the thermostat is inexpensive and a stuck one will cause the same overheating you just tried to fix. Use the Toyota thermostat and its new gasket, and reinstall it with the jiggle valve positioned as the manual shows.
