On the XA50 RAV4 with the 2.5L A25A-FKS, the water pump is a conventional belt-driven unit on the front of the block. You get at it from the right front wheel arch: wheel off, splash shield down, serpentine belt off, then a ring of small bolts. Nothing is exotic, but the bolts are short, into aluminum, and in awkward places, so you want a wobble extension and a small torque wrench more than you want muscle.
The hybrid is a different job entirely. There is no accessory belt — the A/C compressor is electric and so is the engine coolant pump — so the "water pump" is a bolt-on electric assembly with a connector, and the car also has a second inverter coolant pump in its own loop. The thing people get wrong on both versions is the refill: this cooling system traps air, and a poorly bled fill will overheat or blow no heat, which owners then blame on the new pump. Use a funnel kit or a vacuum filler and give it two full heat cycles before you call it done.

| Drain pan 6 qt or larger, low profile Catch coolant from the radiator drain cock. | Required | shop |
| Hose clamp pliers Ratcheting spring-clamp pliers Move the spring clamps on the pump inlet hose / reservoir hose without fighting them. | Recommended | shop |
| Gasket scraper and plastic pick Plastic or brass scraper Clean the pump mating face on the block without gouging aluminum. | Required | shop |
| Torque wrench 1/4 in or 3/8 in drive, 5-25 ft-lb range Water pump bolts thread into aluminum and must be torqued evenly. | Required | shop |
| Torque wrench 1/2 in drive, 30-150 ft-lb Wheel lug nuts to 76 ft-lb. | Required | shop |
| Coolant funnel kit Spill-free funnel with Toyota radiator/reservoir adapters Fill and burp the system; the XA50 traps air easily. | Required | shop |
| Cooling system vacuum filler Venturi type, shop-air powered Fastest reliable way to purge air, especially on the hybrid with its long heater/EGR cooler runs. | Recommended | shop |
| OBD scan tool with Toyota functions Techstream or capable bidirectional tool Hybrid: command the electric water pump and inverter pump on to bleed air; clear any stored pump codes. | Recommended | shop |
| Water pump Gas: A25A-FKS mechanical pump with gasket/O-ring. Hybrid: electric engine coolant pump assembly The replacement unit; buy engine-specific, they are not interchangeable. | Parts | shop |
| Serpentine belt OE-spec accessory belt, 2.5L gas only Replace while it is off if it has any age or cracking on it. | Parts | shop |
| Toyota Super Long Life Coolant Pink SLLC, pre-diluted, 2-3 gal for a full flush Only refill with pink SLLC; the hybrid inverter loop uses the same coolant in a separate circuit. | Consumables | shop |

Gas 2.5L A25A-FKS: mechanical belt-driven pump, needs a serpentine belt tensioner tool and the belt routing diagram; pump and pulley bolts are in the 10-14 mm range. Hybrid A25A-FXS: no drive belt at all — the engine coolant pump is electric, retained by 10 mm bolts with an electrical connector, and there is a separate inverter coolant pump and reservoir that must be bled independently, ideally with a scan tool that can command the pumps.
| Wheel lug nuts | 76 ft-lb (103 Nm) |
| Water pump mounting bolts (gas A25A-FKS) | verify in the service manual (small M6/M8 into aluminum — do not exceed ~15 ft-lb without confirming) |
| Water pump pulley bolts (if separate) | verify in the service manual |
| Electric water pump bolts (hybrid) | verify in the service manual |
| Radiator drain cock | Hand tight only — plastic |
| Engine undercover / splash shield bolts | Snug, approx. 7 ft-lb (10 Nm) — verify in the service manual |
Wheel lug torque (76 ft-lb), the 21 mm lug socket, the 10/12/14 mm fastener range and the belt-driven-vs-electric split between A25A-FKS and A25A-FXS are solid; the exact water pump bolt torques and whether your specific pump uses a gasket, O-ring or FIPG should be confirmed against the Toyota repair manual for your VIN.
No. The A25A-FXS hybrid engine has no accessory drive belt; the engine coolant pump is electric and bolts to the front of the engine with a wiring connector. There is also a second electric pump for the inverter cooling loop.
No. On the gas 2.5L the pump bolts to the front of the engine and comes off once the serpentine belt and the right-side splash shield are out of the way. The timing cover stays in place.
Plan on 2-3 gallons of pre-diluted Toyota pink SLLC if you want a proper fill and a little margin for bleeding. A radiator drain only gives up about 4-5 quarts, so a partial drain and refill is common but leaves old coolant in the block.
21 mm. Use a thin-wall socket so you do not mark the alloy wheels, and torque them back to 76 ft-lb (103 Nm) in a star pattern.
