Which engine you have decides whether this is an afternoon or a weekend. The 5.0L Coyote uses a normal external pump bolted to the front of the engine behind the serpentine belt โ drain, pull the belt, swap it, refill. The 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost, including the 3.5L in the PowerBoost hybrid, use an internal pump driven by a chain off the crankshaft behind the engine front cover. That means the accessory drive, crank damper, front cover and timing chain assembly all come apart, and it is a genuine expert-level job requiring cam phaser holding tools and a new torque-to-yield crank bolt.
The thing people get wrong on the EcoBoost is diagnosing it too late. When the internal pump seal fails, coolant goes into the crankcase, not onto the ground, so there is no puddle to warn you โ just a dropping degas bottle and milky oil. Check the oil before ordering parts. The other common mistake, on every engine, is a sloppy refill: these systems trap air badly, and you need a vacuum filler or a spill-free funnel plus a scan tool to run the auxiliary electric pumps, or you will be chasing a phantom overheat a week later.

5.0L V8: external belt-driven pump, standard 8/10/13 mm sockets and a serpentine belt tool get you there; no timing tools needed. 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost and 3.5L PowerBoost: internal chain-driven pump requiring front cover removal, a crank damper holder and puller, engine-specific cam phaser and chain locking tools, and a new stretch crank bolt. PowerBoost additionally has a separate low-voltage inverter/battery coolant loop with electric pumps that must be bled with a Ford-capable scan tool.

The fastener types, pump location by engine and overall procedure are accurate for the 14th-gen F-150, but bolt sizes vary slightly by engine and bracket, and I have deliberately left most torque values as 'verify in the service manual' rather than guess โ check the Ford workshop manual for your exact engine and model year before final assembly.
Yes. On the 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost, including the PowerBoost hybrid, the pump sits behind the engine front cover and is driven by a chain off the crankshaft. When it leaks, coolant goes into the oil rather than onto the driveway.
The classic signs are a slowly dropping degas bottle with no external leak, milky or overfull engine oil, and coolant smell from the oil fill. Some trucks also weep from the front cover drain port between the pump and the block.
Plan on about 3 to 4 gallons of Motorcraft Orange prediluted (WSS-M97B44-D2) for the main loop, depending on engine and whether you have the auxiliary heater or trailer tow package. PowerBoost needs additional fluid for its separate inverter/battery loop.
Strongly recommended on all engines and effectively required on PowerBoost. The auxiliary electric coolant pumps have to be commanded on to purge air from the heater and hybrid loops, and you may need to clear stored overheat or coolant level codes.
