Which engine you have decides whether this is an afternoon or a weekend. The 5.0L Coyote uses a normal external pump bolted to the front of the engine behind the serpentine belt โ€” drain, pull the belt, swap it, refill. The 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost, including the 3.5L in the PowerBoost hybrid, use an internal pump driven by a chain off the crankshaft behind the engine front cover. That means the accessory drive, crank damper, front cover and timing chain assembly all come apart, and it is a genuine expert-level job requiring cam phaser holding tools and a new torque-to-yield crank bolt.

The thing people get wrong on the EcoBoost is diagnosing it too late. When the internal pump seal fails, coolant goes into the crankcase, not onto the ground, so there is no puddle to warn you โ€” just a dropping degas bottle and milky oil. Check the oil before ordering parts. The other common mistake, on every engine, is a sloppy refill: these systems trap air badly, and you need a vacuum filler or a spill-free funnel plus a scan tool to run the auxiliary electric pumps, or you will be chasing a phantom overheat a week later.

Differences within the 2021-2024 generation

5.0L V8: external belt-driven pump, standard 8/10/13 mm sockets and a serpentine belt tool get you there; no timing tools needed. 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost and 3.5L PowerBoost: internal chain-driven pump requiring front cover removal, a crank damper holder and puller, engine-specific cam phaser and chain locking tools, and a new stretch crank bolt. PowerBoost additionally has a separate low-voltage inverter/battery coolant loop with electric pumps that must be bled with a Ford-capable scan tool.

How the job goes

  1. Identify your engine first. 5.0L V8: external, belt-driven pump โ€” moderate job. 2.7L/3.5L EcoBoost and 3.5L PowerBoost: internal chain-driven pump behind the front cover โ€” expert job.
  2. Park level, let the engine cool completely, disconnect the negative battery terminal. On PowerBoost, follow the high-voltage shutdown procedure and wear Class 0 gloves before touching anything in the hybrid coolant loop.
  3. Remove the engine appearance cover, air intake tube and air box, and the radiator air deflector/underbody shield for access.
  4. Open the degas bottle cap, place a large pan under the radiator, open the radiator drain and drain the system. Drain the block if the manual calls for it on your engine.
  5. Release the belt tensioner with a serpentine tool or breaker bar and remove the drive belt. Note the routing or photograph it.
  6. 5.0L V8: unbolt any hoses, brackets or idler in the way, remove the water pump pulley and the pump retaining bolts, and pull the pump off the front cover. Scrape the sealing surface clean, fit the new gasket/O-ring dry unless told otherwise, and torque the bolts evenly in sequence.
  7. EcoBoost/PowerBoost: continue by removing the cooling fan module, upper radiator support hardware as needed, accessory brackets, alternator, A/C compressor bracket bolts and the crank position sensor.
  8. Hold the damper with a pulley holding tool, break the crank bolt loose, then pull the damper with a puller. Never pry or hammer it.
  9. Remove the oil pan-to-front-cover bolts and all front cover bolts, noting lengths and locations. Separate the cover carefully โ€” it is sealed with silicone, not a gasket.
  10. Rotate the crank to the timing marks, install the cam phaser holding tools and chain wedges, relieve and pin the tensioners, then remove the secondary drive chain and the water pump drive sprocket.
  11. Unbolt and withdraw the internal water pump. Inspect the chain, guides and tensioner โ€” replace them if there is any wear, since you are already this deep.
  12. Install the new pump with fresh seals, torque to spec, and reassemble the chain, tensioner and phasers with all timing marks aligned. Remove the locking tools and turn the engine over two full revolutions by hand to confirm timing before going further.
  13. Clean both front cover sealing faces completely, apply a continuous bead of the specified sealant, fit the cover within the sealant's working time, and torque all bolts in the factory sequence.
  14. Install a new crank bolt with a new damper seal if applicable, hold the damper, and torque in the specified stages plus angle.
  15. Reinstall brackets, accessories, sensors, fan module, hoses and belt. Double-check the belt routing.
  16. Reconnect the battery, close the drains, and fill with Motorcraft Orange prediluted coolant using a spill-free funnel or, better, a vacuum filler.
  17. Bleed the system: run the engine with the funnel attached, cycle heat to full hot, and use a scan tool to command the auxiliary electric coolant pumps to run. On PowerBoost, bleed the inverter/battery loop separately per the procedure.
  18. Bring the engine to full temperature, verify the fan cycles and heater blows hot, then check for leaks. Recheck coolant level cold the next day and after a few heat cycles.

Watch out

The fastener types, pump location by engine and overall procedure are accurate for the 14th-gen F-150, but bolt sizes vary slightly by engine and bracket, and I have deliberately left most torque values as 'verify in the service manual' rather than guess โ€” check the Ford workshop manual for your exact engine and model year before final assembly.

Yes. On the 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost, including the PowerBoost hybrid, the pump sits behind the engine front cover and is driven by a chain off the crankshaft. When it leaks, coolant goes into the oil rather than onto the driveway.

How do I know my EcoBoost water pump is failing?

The classic signs are a slowly dropping degas bottle with no external leak, milky or overfull engine oil, and coolant smell from the oil fill. Some trucks also weep from the front cover drain port between the pump and the block.

How much coolant does a 2021-2024 F-150 take?
