Of all the maintenance jobs on a 14th-gen F-150, this is the easiest. The airbox sits high on the passenger side, the lid is held by spring clips and one or two 8 mm hex-head screws, and the filter is a flat panel you lift straight out. Most people finish in under 15 minutes with a single socket and a screwdriver.
The mistake to avoid is not the removal, it is the reassembly. If the rubber sealing lip of the new filter is not fully in its groove, or one spring clip is not fully snapped home, you get unmetered air past the MAF and can end up chasing lean codes and a rough idle. Seat the filter flat, check all four corners, then close the lid and listen at idle for any whistle.

How the job goes
Park on level ground, shut the engine off and let it cool. The intake area gets warm but there is no need to disconnect the battery.
Open the hood and locate the black plastic airbox on the passenger side, forward of the strut tower, with the corrugated intake tube running to the turbo inlet or throttle body.
Blow or vacuum loose leaves and grit off the top of the airbox so nothing falls in when the lid comes off.
Release the spring clips around the lid edge — usually two at the front and one or two at the outboard side. Lever them off with a flat screwdriver, pulling outward and down.
Remove the 8 mm hex-head screw(s) securing the lid, typically at the rear corner near the cowl. Keep them in a magnetic tray; they thread into plastic.
If a wiring harness clip or coolant hose crosses the lid, unclip it with a trim tool and set it aside. Do not unplug the MAF sensor unless you need the room.
Lift the rear of the lid and rotate it toward the intake tube. If the lid will not clear, loosen the worm-gear clamp at the intake tube and slide the tube back slightly.
Lift the old panel filter straight out. Note which way the pleats and the rubber sealing lip face so the new one goes in the same orientation.
Vacuum the lower housing. Wipe the sealing flange clean. Never blast compressed air toward the MAF or intake tract.
Seat the new filter flat in the lower housing with the seal fully in its groove all the way around. It should sit level with no corner riding up.
Set the lid back on, make sure the front locating tabs engage, then start the 8 mm screw(s) by hand and snug them — do not over-torque into the plastic.
Snap all spring clips fully closed; you should hear each one seat. Re-clip any harness you moved and retighten the intake tube clamp if you loosened it.
Start the engine and listen for a whistle or sucking sound around the lid, which means a clip is not seated or the filter seal is pinched. Clear any pending MAF/intake codes if you disturbed the sensor.
Watch out
Do not run the engine with the airbox open — unfiltered air and loose debris can score the turbos on EcoBoost trucks.
The lid screws thread into plastic. Over-tightening strips the boss and you will never get a proper seal again.
Only use MAF-safe cleaner on the mass air flow sensor, and never touch the sensing wire. Carb or brake cleaner will ruin it.
A pinched or upside-down filter seal causes unmetered air and can trigger lean codes (P0171/P0174) or rough idle.
On PowerBoost hybrids, respect the orange high-voltage cabling routed in the engine bay; do not use it as a handhold or lean on it.
The 8 mm hex-head lid screws and spring-clip design are consistent across 14th-gen F-150 airboxes, but clip count and screw count vary slightly by engine and build date, so check your own lid before prying.
