On the XA50 RAV4 this is about as easy as maintenance gets. The airbox is right at the passenger-side front of the engine bay, the lid pivots on front tabs and is held by four spring clips, and the filter is a plain rectangular paper element that drops straight in. No fasteners to lose, no trim to remove, and the gas and hybrid drivetrains share the same setup because both use the 2.5L A25A engine.
The mistake people make is the reassembly, not the removal. The lid's front edge has to hook into its tabs before the clips will pull down evenly, and the filter has to sit with its rubber seal upward and flat in the housing. Force a clip with the lid cocked and you get an intake whistle, a dusty throttle body a year later, or a cracked lid. Also worth two minutes: vacuum the leaf litter out of the bottom of the box while the lid is open, since that corner of the engine bay collects debris.

There is no difference in tools or filter between the 2.5L A25A-FKS gas and the hybrid/Prime versions of the XA50 — same airbox, same four clips, same element. How the job goes
Park on level ground, shut the engine off and let it cool. On the hybrid, press the power button off and confirm the READY light is out; the system can start the engine on its own if it is left in READY.
Open the hood and find the black plastic air cleaner box on the passenger side, at the front corner of the engine bay, with the intake duct running from its lid toward the throttle body.
Look around the lid for the four metal/plastic spring clips (two at the outer edge, one at each end area). Unhook each one with your fingers, using a small flat screwdriver as a lever if they are stiff. Do not pry on the plastic lid itself.
If the intake duct or a wiring harness clip limits lid travel, unclip the harness or loosen the duct clamp with pliers or a 10 mm socket. On most RAV4s this is not necessary.
Lift the rear of the lid and tilt it up and forward. The front edge of the lid engages hinge tabs in the housing, so hinge it rather than trying to pull it straight off. Leave the duct and the MAF/intake sensor connected.
Lift the old rectangular filter straight up and out. Note which way the rubber sealing frame faces (it faces up) and the orientation of the pleats before it leaves the box.
Vacuum leaves, seeds and dust from the lower housing. Do not blow compressed air toward the intake tube, and never wipe the sensor element inside the intake. Wipe the housing sealing lip with a dry towel.
Compare the new filter to the old one for size and depth, then set it into the housing with the seal facing up, seated evenly all the way around with no lifted corners.
Re-engage the lid's front hinge tabs first, then lower the rear of the lid and press it down evenly while you snap all four clips home. Every clip must click; a lid that isn't seated will whistle and let unfiltered air in.
Reconnect any harness clips or retighten the duct clamp, then start the engine and listen for intake whistle or hissing. Confirm no new check engine light, and log the mileage for your next change (roughly every 30,000 miles, sooner in dusty or dirt-road use).
Watch out
On the hybrid, make sure the vehicle is fully powered off, not just quiet — the gas engine can crank without warning in READY mode.
Do not touch or clean the mass-airflow sensor screen inside the intake tube; even a rag can damage it and cause rough running codes.
Skip compressed air in the airbox. It pushes grit down the intake tract toward the throttle body and sensor.
Install the filter with the rubber seal facing up. Upside down, it will not seal and will let dusty air bypass the element.
If you fit an oiled reusable filter, do not over-oil it. Excess oil migrates onto the MAF sensor and causes lean/rich codes.
Don't force the lid closed if a clip won't reach — the front hinge tabs or the filter frame are not seated. Re-open and reseat.
