Differences within the 2021-2024 generation

Bolt and socket sizes do not change between the 2.7 EcoBoost, 3.5 EcoBoost, 5.0 V8 and 3.5 PowerBoost โ€” all use 22 mm lug nuts, 13 mm rear caliper guide pin bolts and 21 mm bracket bolts. What changes is rotor size and pad part number: heavy-payload and trailer-tow-max packages get larger rear rotors, and the Raptor uses its own larger rear brake hardware. PowerBoost trucks share the same brakes but often show far less rear pad wear thanks to regenerative braking, and you must keep clear of the orange high-voltage cabling when jacking.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the front wheels, and leave the ignition on accessory with a battery maintainer if you have one โ€” the EPB procedure needs system voltage.
  2. Put the electric parking brake into service/maintenance mode with FORScan or a bidirectional scanner (Body/EPB menu: 'Park Brake Unjam / Service Mode'). The rear caliper motors will buzz and retract. Confirm the EPB light shows service mode before touching anything.
  3. Loosen the rear lug nuts a half turn with the 22 mm socket while the wheels are on the ground.
  4. Lift the rear axle, set jack stands under the frame rails or axle tubes, and remove both rear wheels.
  5. Note how the pads and abutment clips sit, then remove the two 13 mm guide pin bolts from the back of the caliper. Hold the pin with a 13 mm wrench if it spins.
  6. Slide the caliper off the rotor and hang it from a coil spring or frame with a bungee cord. Never let it dangle on the hose or the EPB wiring.
  7. Pop the old pads out of the bracket and remove the abutment/anti-rattle clips.
  8. Remove the two 21 mm caliper bracket bolts (long breaker bar โ€” these are tight and often corroded) and lift the bracket off.
  9. Pull the rotor. If it is rust-bonded, strike the face between the studs with a hammer, or run bolts into the two threaded jack holes if your rotor has them.
  10. Wire-brush the hub flange down to bare metal, including around each stud, and wipe with brake cleaner. A high spot here causes runout and pedal pulsation.
  11. Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove the shipping oil. Add only a very thin smear of anti-seize on the hub face, nothing on the friction surface.
  12. Fit the new rotor, hold it with a couple of lug nuts, then reinstall the bracket and torque the 21 mm bolts to spec.
  13. Grease the guide pins and the abutment clip contact points with silicone brake grease, install the new clips and pads, and keep grease off the friction material.
  14. Check the master cylinder level and draw off some fluid if it is at max, then compress the caliper piston fully with the spreader or C-clamp.
  15. Reinstall the caliper over the new pads and torque the 13 mm guide pin bolts to spec.
  16. Repeat on the other side, then reinstall the wheels and torque the lug nuts to 150 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  17. Exit EPB service mode with the scan tool and run the parking brake calibration / apply-release cycle. Cycle the dash switch a few times and confirm no EPB fault.
  18. With the truck still stationary, pump the brake pedal until it is firm, top off the DOT 4 LV fluid, and check for a solid pedal before moving.
  19. Bed the pads: from about 35 mph, do 6-8 moderate stops down to 5 mph with brief cooling between, then drive a few minutes without holding the brake at a stop.
