Tools you need for tire rotation on a 2019-2024 Ram 1500

Easy · 45-75 minutes · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 22 mm deep socket, 1/2 in drive
  2. 1/2 in drive breaker bar
  3. Torque wrench, 30-150 ft-lb, 1/2 in drive
  4. 3-ton floor jack
  5. Jack stands, 3-ton pair

On the DT-generation Ram 1500 a tire rotation is about as simple as truck maintenance gets: six M14 x 1.5 lug nuts per wheel, all taking a 22 mm socket, all going back to 130 ft-lb. Engine choice — 3.6 Pentastar eTorque, 5.7 Hemi eTorque, or 3.0 EcoDiesel — changes nothing about the wheels or the torque spec. Wheel diameters range from 18 to 22 inches, and the heavier 22s are worth handling with two hands or a wheel dolly.

The two things people get wrong are jacking an air-suspension truck without putting it in Tire Service mode, and finishing with an impact gun instead of a torque wrench. The first can leave you with a fault code and a suspension that keeps trying to level itself while it's in the air; the second is the number one cause of warped-feeling brake pedals on these trucks.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Lug nut size (22 mm), stud size (M14 x 1.5), bolt pattern (6 x 139.7) and torque (130 ft-lb) are identical on the 3.6 Pentastar eTorque, 5.7 Hemi eTorque and 3.0 EcoDiesel. The only trim-based difference is the optional four-corner air suspension, which requires Tire Service mode before lifting, and wheel diameter (18-22 in), which affects placard tire pressures, not tool sizes.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level pavement, set the parking brake, and chock the wheels that will stay down.
  2. If the truck has the four-corner air suspension, turn the ignition to RUN and use the Uconnect screen (Vehicle > Suspension) or the console switch to select Tire Service / Wheel Change mode and wait for the system to confirm it is disabled. Never lift an air-suspended DT without doing this.
  3. Loosen each lug nut about a half turn with the 22 mm socket and breaker bar while the tires are still on the ground.
  4. Lift at the factory jack points: the frame rail pinch pads behind the front wheels and ahead of the rear wheels, or place the jack under the rear axle tube next to the spring pad. Do not jack on the oil pan, control arms, or any air suspension component.
  5. Set jack stands under the frame rails before removing any wheel. Lift one axle at a time or the whole truck if you have four stands.
  6. Remove the wheels. Wire-brush rust off the hub mounting face and the back of each wheel.
  7. Rotate using the rearward-cross pattern for the 4x4 and 4x2 with non-directional tires: rear tires move straight forward to the same side, front tires cross to the opposite-side rear.
  8. If the tires are directional (arrow on sidewall), only swap front-to-rear on the same side. If the truck has staggered or different-size front/rear tires, do not rotate across axles.
  9. To include a matching full-size spare in a five-tire rotation: right rear to spare position, spare to right front, right front to left rear, left rear to left front, left front to right rear.
  10. Hang each wheel on the studs, start all six nuts by hand, and snug them in a star pattern.
  11. Lower the truck until the tires just touch, then torque all lug nuts to 130 ft-lb (176 Nm) in a star pattern, in two passes.
  12. Lower fully, remove chocks, set all tires to the pressure on the driver's door placard (commonly 35-42 psi depending on wheel size and payload rating), and check for TPMS warnings.
  13. Exit Tire Service mode on air-suspension trucks and let the suspension re-level before driving.
  14. Re-check lug torque after 50-100 miles.

Watch out

The 22 mm lug socket, M14 x 1.5 studs, six-lug pattern and 130 ft-lb torque are consistent across all 2019-2024 DT Ram 1500 engines and wheel sizes; confirm the torque figure and your door-placard pressures for your specific trim and wheel package.

Frequently asked

What size socket are the lug nuts on a 2019-2024 Ram 1500?

22 mm. All DT Ram 1500 trims use six M14 x 1.5 studs with 22 mm hex lug nuts, regardless of engine or wheel size. A deep 6-point socket works best because some wheels have deep lug pockets.

What is the lug nut torque for a Ram 1500 DT?

130 ft-lb (176 Nm), tightened in a star pattern in two passes. Re-check after 50-100 miles, especially on new or freshly refinished wheels.

Do I need to put the air suspension in a special mode before jacking?

Yes. On trucks with the four-corner air suspension, select Tire Service / Wheel Change mode from the Uconnect suspension menu or the console switch with the ignition in RUN, and wait for confirmation before lifting. Skipping this can set faults and overwork the compressor.

What rotation pattern should I use on a 4x4 Ram 1500?

Rearward cross: rear tires go straight forward on the same side, and front tires cross to the opposite rear corner. If your tires are directional, only swap front-to-rear on the same side of the truck.
