Rear brakes on the DT-generation Ram 1500 are mechanically easy — big vented rotors that slide straight off the hub with no retaining screw, a two-piece caliper and bracket, and generous access once the wheel is off. The one thing that stops people is the electric park brake. Most DT trucks have an EPB motor bolted to the back of each rear caliper, and the piston will not retract until the module is put into service mode with a scan tool. Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Engine choice (5.7 Hemi eTorque, 3.6 Pentastar eTorque, 3.0 EcoDiesel) does not change any rear brake tool size — all DT 1500s use 22 mm lug nuts and the same rear caliper family. Rotor diameter and pad compound do vary with axle rating and trim (heavier payload, air suspension and Rebel/TRX packages), so order by VIN or measure the old rotor rather than assuming.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the front wheels, and break the rear lug nuts loose while the tires are still down.
  2. Connect the scan tool with the ignition on and run the electric park brake service/maintenance routine. The motors will buzz and retract. Leave the tool connected.
  3. Lift the rear at the axle and set jack stands under the frame rails. Remove both rear wheels.
  4. Note how the pads and abutment clips sit. Take a photo before disassembly.
  5. Remove the two caliper guide pin bolts (13 mm head or 7 mm internal hex). Lift the caliper off and hang it from a spring or frame member with a bungee — do not let it hang on the hose.
  6. Pull the old pads out of the bracket and pop the abutment clips off.
  7. Remove the two large caliper bracket bolts (21 mm, verify size) and set the bracket aside.
  8. Tap the rotor off with a dead-blow hammer, hitting between the studs. If it is seized, thread an M8 bolt into the rotor's threaded relief hole if present, or apply penetrant and keep tapping.
  9. Wire brush the hub face clean so the new rotor sits flat. A whisker of rust here causes runout and pedal pulsation.
  10. Wipe the new rotor with brake cleaner on both faces to strip the shipping oil. Put a very thin film of anti-seize on the hub face only, then fit the rotor and hold it with two lug nuts.
  11. Clean the bracket abutment surfaces, fit new clips, and grease the pad ear contact points lightly.
  12. Reinstall the caliper bracket and torque the bolts to spec. Install the pads in the bracket.
  13. Slowly compress the caliper piston with a spreader or C-clamp until it bottoms. If it will not move, the EPB is not in service mode — recheck with the scan tool.
  14. Clean and re-grease the guide pins, then mount the caliper over the pads and torque the guide pin bolts.
  15. Repeat on the other side. Refit the wheels and torque the lug nuts to 130 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  16. Use the scan tool to exit EPB service mode so the motors re-apply. Cycle the park brake switch two or three times.
  17. With the engine off and ignition on, pump the brake pedal until firm. Check the reservoir level.
  18. Bed the pads in: eight to ten moderate stops from about 40 mph to 10 mph, then drive a few miles without dragging the brakes to cool them.
