Tools you need for wiper blades on a 2019-2024 Ram 1500

Easy · 10-15 minutes · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. Small flat-blade screwdriver
  2. Needle-nose pliers (stuck latch)
  3. Microfiber towel
  4. Tape measure, for size check

On the DT-generation Ram 1500 this is about as easy as truck maintenance gets. The arms lift and lock, the blade unhooks by sliding it down the arm's hook, and both sides come off in a couple of minutes with no tools at all in most cases. The only sizing detail that matters is that the two sides are different lengths: 22 inches on the driver side, 21 inches on the passenger side. Fit two 22s and the passenger blade will foul the A-pillar trim at the top of its sweep.

The mistake people make is letting a bare wiper arm spring back against the glass. The DT's arm springs are strong, and a metal tip on a cold windshield will chip or crack it — a folded towel on the glass costs nothing. The second most common mistake is not pulling the new blade up the hook until the latch actually clicks; if it only half-seats, it will fly off in rain at highway speed.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

No differences: blade sizes, arm style and procedure are identical on the 3.6 Pentastar eTorque, 5.7 Hemi eTorque and 3.0 EcoDiesel, and across Quad Cab and Crew Cab. Only the optional wiper de-icer (heated glass at the park area) and rain-sensing wipers vary by trim, and neither changes the blades or the tools.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, turn the ignition off and make sure the wipers are in their normal parked position at the base of the windshield.
  2. If a blade is parked under the hood lip or you need more room, switch the ignition to ON/RUN, flick the wipers on, then switch the ignition off mid-sweep so the arms stop out in the middle of the glass.
  3. Lift the wiper arm away from the glass until it locks at its stop. Lay a folded microfiber towel on the windshield under each arm as insurance.
  4. Look at the connector: most DT trucks use a hook (J-hook) or latch-style adapter. Press the release tab or squeeze the latch with your fingers, or lever it gently with the small flat screwdriver.
  5. Slide the old blade down the hook toward the arm's pivot to unhook it, then pull it off. Do not force it sideways — you will bend the arm end.
  6. Compare old and new: 22 in on the driver side, 21 in on the passenger side. Fit the correct adapter to the new blade if the blade came with multiple adapters.
  7. Wipe the arm tip clean, then hook the new blade on and pull it up the hook until the latch clicks. Tug the blade firmly — it must not slide off.
  8. Lower the arm gently onto the glass. Never let a bare arm snap down; it will crack the windshield.
  9. Clean the windshield with glass cleaner and wipe the new rubber edge with alcohol.
  10. Wet the glass with washer fluid and run the wipers through low, high and the rain-sense/intermittent settings. Check for skipping, chatter or contact with the cowl or A-pillar trim.

Watch out

The 22 in driver / 21 in passenger sizing and the hook/latch attachment are correct for the DT Ram 1500 across all three engines, but confirm the adapter style against your own arm end before buying, since some replacement blades ship with multiple adapters.

Frequently asked

What size wiper blades does a 2019-2024 Ram 1500 take?

22 inches on the driver side and 21 inches on the passenger side. They are not the same, so buy them individually or get a boxed pair sold specifically for the DT Ram 1500.

Does the 2019-2024 Ram 1500 have a rear wiper?

No. No DT pickup cab or bed configuration has a rear wiper, so you only ever buy two blades.

How do I get the wipers to stand up off the glass on my Ram 1500?

Turn the ignition to RUN, switch the wipers on, then turn the ignition off while the arms are mid-sweep. They stop out in the middle of the windshield, giving you room to work away from the hood lip.

My new blades chatter and streak — what did I do wrong?

Usually it is residue, not the blade. Clean the glass with ammonia-free glass cleaner, then wipe both the glass wipe path and the new rubber edge with isopropyl alcohol. Also check the blade is fully latched and the arm is not twisted so the rubber sits flat on the glass.
