Tools you need for wiper blades on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4

Easy · 10-20 minutes · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. Small flat-blade screwdriver
  2. Trim/panel pry tool, plastic
  3. 14 mm socket, 3/8 in drive (arm nut only)
  4. Microfiber towels
  5. Needle-nose pliers

On the XA50 RAV4 this is a five-minute job once the arms are where you can reach them. Toyota parks the front wipers deep under the cowl trim, so the usual mistake is trying to yank an arm up over the plastic instead of first cycling the wipers off mid-sweep (or using the service position: ignition off, then push the stalk to MIST within about a minute).

Sizes are the same for every 2019-2024 RAV4, gas or hybrid: 26 in on the driver's side, 16 in on the passenger side, 12 in on the rear glass where fitted. The other thing people get wrong is not seating the connector clip fully — if the new blade slides off on the highway, the bare arm will score the windshield. Tug each blade hard before you drop the arm back down.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

No difference between the 2.5 L A25A-FKS, the hybrid, or the Prime — blade sizes and attachment are identical. The only variation is trim-related: some base configurations and certain markets skip the rear wiper, so the 12 in blade may not apply.

How the job goes

  1. Turn the ignition ON (READY on hybrid), flick the wipers so they sweep, then switch them off while they are partway up the glass so the blades sit clear of the cowl. Alternatively, within about a minute of switching the car off, push the wiper stalk up to MIST to move the arms to the service position — confirm this works on your trim.
  2. Turn the car fully off before touching the blades so they can't cycle on you.
  3. Lift one wiper arm off the glass until the spring-loaded joint locks upright. Do not let a bare arm snap back onto the windshield.
  4. Turn the blade so the connector faces you. On the OE beam blade, press the release tab/latch on the underside of the connector (a small flat screwdriver helps) and slide the blade down along the arm to separate it from the hook or pin.
  5. Compare old and new: the driver's side is the long one (26 in) and must not be mixed up with the 16 in passenger blade.
  6. Fit the new blade to the arm, using the correct adapter if you bought aftermarket. Slide it on until you hear or feel the clip snap home, then tug the blade firmly — it must not slide off.
  7. Lay the arm gently back onto the glass and repeat on the other side. Make sure the two blades are not overlapping in the park position.
  8. Rear wiper: lift the arm off the glass, press the tab or squeeze the hook clip, and pull the 12 in blade straight down off the J-hook. Push the new one on until it clicks.
  9. Clean the windshield and rear glass, then wipe each new rubber edge with a damp microfiber to remove factory coating.
  10. Top up washer fluid, run the wipers with plenty of fluid, and check for streaking, chatter, or a blade hitting the A-pillar trim or cowl.

Watch out

Blade lengths for the XA50 RAV4 (26 in driver / 16 in passenger / 12 in rear) are solid across 2019-2024 gas and hybrid; the exact connector style and the arm-nut sizes can vary slightly by build, so inspect your old blade's clip and check the nut with a socket before buying or torquing.

Frequently asked

What size wiper blades does a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 take?

26 inches on the driver's side, 16 inches on the passenger side, and 12 inches for the rear liftgate wiper. That's the same for LE through Limited, TRD Off-Road, Hybrid and Prime.

How do I get the RAV4 wipers into service position?

Turn the ignition off, then within roughly a minute push the wiper stalk up to the MIST position — the arms move up the glass so you can reach the connectors. If that doesn't work on your car, just turn the wipers on with the ignition in ON/READY and switch them off while the blades are partway up.

Do I need tools to change RAV4 wiper blades?

Not really — a small flat screwdriver or plastic pry tool to press the release tab is usually enough. You only need a 14 mm socket if you're removing a wiper arm itself.

Why do my new RAV4 wipers chatter or streak?

Usually residual factory coating or a dirty windshield. Clean the glass with ammonia-free glass cleaner and wipe the new rubber edge with isopropyl alcohol; if it persists, check the blade is fully clipped in and the arm isn't twisted so the blade sits flat on the glass.
