Tools you need for cabin air filter on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4

Easy · 10-15 minutes · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. Cabin air filter, Toyota 87139-0N010 type
  2. Small flat-blade or trim tool
  3. Shop light or flashlight
  4. Nitrile gloves

On the XA50 RAV4 this is the easiest maintenance item on the car. The filter lives in a housing behind the glovebox, and the glovebox itself comes down by unclipping the damper arm and squeezing the sides past two stop tabs — no screws, no sockets, no trim panels. A replacement element costs a fraction of the dealer's price and the whole job takes less time than parking at the service department.

The two things people get wrong: forcing the glovebox down before the damper arm is unclipped, which snaps the plastic ball socket, and installing the filter upside down. The airflow arrow on the filter edge must point down on this car. Also resist buying a cheap oversize aftermarket filter — if the frame is a hair too big, the cover tabs won't click and you'll get a whistle at high fan speed.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

No differences. The 2.5L A25A-FKS gas, the 2.5L hybrid and the Prime/plug-in hybrid all use the same glovebox assembly, the same filter housing and the same filter element, so the procedure and (lack of) tool sizes are identical across LE, XLE, Adventure, TRD Off-Road and Limited trims.

How the job goes

  1. Move the passenger seat back and empty the glovebox completely so nothing falls out when it swings down.
  2. Open the glovebox fully. On the right side, find the damper/slow-close arm and unclip its ball socket from the glovebox pin (pull it straight off, or pry gently with a trim tool).
  3. Squeeze the two sides of the glovebox bin inward to clear the left and right stop tabs, then let the box drop down past its normal stop. You can pull the whole bin out or leave it hanging.
  4. Locate the rectangular filter housing cover behind where the glovebox was. Pinch the tab on each end of the cover inward and pull the cover off.
  5. Slide the old filter straight out, keeping it level — it will be full of loose debris. Note the AIRFLOW arrow printed on its edge; on the RAV4 it points DOWN.
  6. Vacuum out the housing and wipe the surrounding area. If you are using evaporator cleaner, spray now per its instructions with the blower off.
  7. Slide the new filter in with the airflow arrow pointing down, seated fully so the frame edges sit inside the housing rails.
  8. Refit the cover until both end tabs click. Lift the glovebox, align the two side stops and press the sides in so they engage.
  9. Reconnect the damper arm ball socket to the glovebox pin, then open and close the box to check it moves smoothly and latches.
  10. Run the blower on high and check for strong, quiet airflow with no whistling from a misseated cover.

Watch out

I am confident the XA50 RAV4 (2019-2024, gas and hybrid) uses a tool-free behind-glovebox cabin filter with the airflow arrow pointing down; confirm the exact part number by VIN since Toyota lists both standard and charcoal-impregnated elements.

Frequently asked

How often should I change the cabin filter on a RAV4?

Toyota's schedule calls for inspection at every 15,000-mile service and replacement as needed; most owners do well changing it every 15,000-20,000 miles, or annually if you drive dusty roads, park under trees or run the recirculation setting a lot.

Do I need any tools to change the RAV4 cabin filter?

No. The glovebox and the filter cover are all snap-fit. A small plastic trim tool makes unclipping the damper arm easier and a flashlight helps, but nothing has to be unbolted.

Which way does the arrow on the filter point?

Down. Airflow through the RAV4's HVAC box at the filter is downward, so the AIRFLOW arrow printed on the filter's frame edge should point toward the floor when installed.

Is the hybrid or RAV4 Prime filter different from the gas model?

No, all XA50 RAV4 variants use the same cabin filter (Toyota 87139-0N010 type) and the same behind-glovebox access. Only the filter media option differs — standard particulate versus activated-charcoal odor-absorbing.
