On the XA50 RAV4, the rear brake job itself is easy โ€” two 14 mm guide-pin bolts for the caliper, two 17 mm bolts for the bracket, 21 mm lugs, and a solid rear rotor that usually just needs a couple of M8 bolts in the jacking holes to break free. What turns it into a job you have to plan for is the electronic parking brake: the motor sits right on each rear caliper, so the pistons have to be commanded back with a scan tool before anything comes apart, and commanded closed again when you're done.

Gas 2.5 and hybrid models use the same rear brake hardware and the same fastener sizes, so the tool list doesn't change. The mistake people make is buying a screw-type piston wind-back kit and trying to twist the rear pistons in like an older Toyota. Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Rear brake fastener sizes are identical across the 2.5 A25A-FKS gas, the hybrid, and the Prime plug-in: 21 mm lug nuts, 14 mm caliper guide-pin bolts, 17 mm caliper bracket bolts. Rotor diameter and thickness can vary slightly between base and higher-output/Prime trims, so measure or order by VIN. All trims in this generation use the motor-on-caliper electronic parking brake, so the scan tool requirement applies to every one of them.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the front wheels, and confirm you have a scan tool that can command Toyota EPB maintenance mode before you start โ€” without it the caliper will not release the pads.
  2. Loosen the rear lug nuts a quarter turn with the 21 mm socket and breaker bar while the wheels are on the ground.
  3. Lift the rear of the vehicle, support it on jack stands at the factory lift points, and remove both rear wheels.
  4. Connect the scan tool, go to the parking brake / EPB actuator system, and run the maintenance (release/open) routine. The motors will whir and the pistons retract. Leave the tool connected and the system in service mode. Do not press the EPB switch while working.
  5. Open the brake fluid reservoir cap briefly to relieve pressure if you plan to press the piston further, then loosely refit it.
  6. If present, unclip the brake hose and EPB motor harness from their bracket on the strut/trailing arm so nothing pulls when the caliper is moved.
  7. Remove the two 14 mm caliper guide-pin bolts. Hold the guide pin with a wrench if the bolt spins. Slide the caliper off the rotor and hang it from the spring with a bungee โ€” never let it dangle on the hose or motor wiring.
  8. Pull the old pads out of the bracket and remove the anti-rattle clips/shims. Note pad orientation; the wear indicator usually goes inboard/top.
  9. Remove the two 17 mm caliper bracket bolts and take the bracket off. These are often tight and rusty; use the breaker bar and steady pressure.
  10. Remove the rotor retaining screw if fitted. If the rotor is seized, thread two M8 x 1.25 bolts evenly into the jacking holes in the rotor hat and tighten alternately until the rotor pops off. Penetrating oil and taps on the hat with a dead blow help.
  11. Clean the hub face thoroughly with a wire brush or rotary hub cleaner until bare metal, then wipe with brake cleaner. A rusty hub face is the number one cause of new-rotor vibration.
  12. Wipe the new rotor both sides with brake cleaner to remove the shipping oil. Apply a very thin film of hub paste to the hub face only, then fit the rotor and snug the retaining screw or hold it with a lug nut.
  13. Clean the caliper bracket abutment surfaces, refit the bracket, and torque the 17 mm bolts to spec.
  14. Fit new anti-rattle clips, apply a small amount of silicone brake grease to the pad ears and the backs of the shims (never the friction material), and install the pads.
  15. Clean the guide pins, re-grease them with silicone brake lube, check the rubber boots are intact, and slide the caliper over the pads.
  16. Install and torque the two 14 mm guide-pin bolts to spec, then reclip the hose and EPB harness into their bracket.
  17. Use the scan tool to close/reset the EPB out of maintenance mode. Let it cycle fully and confirm no fault codes.
  18. Refit the wheels, lower the vehicle, and torque the lug nuts to 76 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  19. With the engine running, pump the brake pedal several times until firm, then apply and release the parking brake switch two or three times. Check fluid level and top off with DOT 3 if low.
  20. Bed the brakes in: several moderate stops from about 35 mph without coming to a full stop, then drive gently for a few miles to let them cool. Recheck lug torque after 50 miles.

Watch out

The 21 mm lug, 14 mm guide-pin and 17 mm bracket bolt sizes and the EPB service-mode requirement are consistent across XA50 gas and hybrid rear brakes, but confirm your rotor diameter and the exact bracket/guide-pin torque figures against the Toyota service data for your VIN before final tightening.

Can I do the rear brakes on a RAV4 XA50 without a scan tool?
